About us

The Kings Arms is a real gem of a pub with an original wood panelled bar. The first mention of the pub on the site is in 1854 and the bar is typical of detail work carried out by local craftsmen of the period both internally and externally. The Kings Arms is a multi award winning pub notably local Sunderland & South Tyneside CAMRA pub of the year 2005, 2006 and 2007 and also regional winner in both 2006 and 2007 going forward to the national stage.

The bar features nine hand pumps with Timothy Taylor’s Landlord as the resident beer plus seven guest ales and one real cider. The guest ales are sourced from all over the country and many are not seen anywhere else in the area. Such breweries are Newby Wyke from South Lincolnshire, Red Lion from Ossett and Brown Cow from Selby.

There is always a strong North-East influence with ales from the likes of Leamside, Big Lamp, Bull Lane, Durham , High House Farm, Mordue, Jarrow, and Wylam .The pub is located in the old industrial heartland of Deptford where shipbuilding was once the foundation of the town and being only 10 minutes from the city centre is well worth a stroll.

A beer garden with Marquee is located to the rear of the pub. The Marquee, which hosts live music in the summer months is also available for private hire. For enquiries please contact Derek or Martin on (0191) 5679804 for further details.

The Kings has views over the River Wear to the Stadium of Light which is only a short walk with ample match day parking ideal for a pre or post match pint. There are three large screen TV’s in the Kings should you wish to watch the sporting action in more comfortable surroundings.

And if you're feeling a little peckish on your visit try one of our superb toasted paninis.

Been drinking there 40 year and seen the good the bad but at the moment it's the ugly. Owner doesn't have time for it and is only holding out for new bridge and housing estate . Was a top real ale pub in Sunderland but struggles to put a light ale on now . Give it a miss and go to the shop isis

Tried a few times to enjoy a pint in The Kings Arms. Very poor quality, ales taste like they haven’t cleaned the lines for months, sorry to the staff in there because they are canny but massively let down by variety of beers and the quality. Just walked out and left half a pint never going back. Avoid

Could be a nice pub but served us two pints of cask ale that were like vinegar. No real alternative available. Next two customers who came in asked for a lager that was on the pump but was not available and do walked out and the next customer asked for a bottled cider but there was none. A nice looking bar but very much a case of style over substance

Not many of us in there but made to feel very welcome, had a great chat and the bar lady was knowledgeable about Sunderland

Superb. Very well kept beer, extremely personable barman and a historic pub. What more do you want. Get yourself there.
