The Poet offers an informal yet refined dining experience in the heart of the Kent countryside. Set in a charismatic 16th century building, diners can expect food of the highest standards, made using the finest local and seasonal produce and lovingly prepared by a small team of chefs led by co-owner Petrus Madutlela.
In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 70 craft gins available.
BEHIND THE NAME
World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. We're pretty sure he would have loved our food too!.

Amazing, amazing, amazing. They have ticked all the boxes. Great staff, delicious food, and a perfect atmosphere! I would highly recommend the Poet for anyone looking to enjoy a spectacular meal or pop by for a drink. They are dog friendly, so you can bring your little doggo with you and sit in the front area. Our pup is never short of hellos before he curls up near us and settles down for the evening. The team here are so caring, thoughtful, kind, and efficient. It’s our first time coming for the Sunday roast, and it’s completely blown our minds. You really feel the individual touch when you visit the Poet. You can pop in to just have a drink, they have a fabulous wine selection and some divine cocktails to choose from. Thank you all for always giving us the best time! We will be back very soon:)
The food and wine were delicious, highlights were the scallops and the jasmine tea burnt cream. One of the few places I’ve visited where decent wine is offered by the carafe. The lunch menu is sadly not available on Saturday.
Without doubt one of the best experiences myself and my friends have ever had. We booked ahead and were met with such generous and accommodating service by Tom. The drinks were amazing and the food was unreal. We will be coming back for years to come. We cannot thank the staff enough for such a wonderful experience. What a gem of a place.
Traveled all the way from London and it didn’t disappoint. First impression, the place was really warm & inviting and the staffs made you feel right at home. I ordered a couple of things but the scallop with risotto really stood out. It was light and tastefully done. The millefeuille is not to be missed. Loved the combination of pistachio and raspberry. Chef Lee told me that they get the ingredients seasonal and locally , no wonder everything tasted so fresh. Highly recommended and will definitely be back!
