Richard Harris Barham was born in 1788, at 61 Burgate, across the road from this Wetherspoon pub. Using the pen name Thomas Ingoldsby, he wrote The Ingoldsby Legends which first appeared in 1840, in a periodical edited by Charles Dickens.
Wetherspoon’s chairman and founder, Tim Martin, said: “We take immense pride in the restoration and refurbishment of wonderful buildings into Wetherspoon pubs. We feel that it is right to celebrate the history of the buildings.”.
Ordered 2 large breakfast one was missing an egg the other was missing a sausage and all the food was cold. We watched it sitting on the servery for 10 minutes whilst the waitress chated to a member of staff who had what looked like a lovely breakfast. Never again
I only know this pub as a watering hole. It’s a Wetherspoons - cheap drinks, cheap food (with a drink included at a reasonable price), reasonably efficient (but uninterested) staff, and characterful slightly sloshed customers. It delivers on all four. It’s a great location and financially a good alternative to the tourist places. There is another bar which you can reach by following the signs to the toilet.
It was quite empty when we visited, which could be why there were very few staff on duty. It wasn't the cleanest. Tables and menus were all sticky and grubby. Service was good but not very friendly. Prices were cheap, and that's probably why it's so popular. Overall, OK.
Spoons is like that one friend who never got the memo about growing up. The décor is a charming mishmash that screams, "I couldn't decide, so I went with everything!" And the carpet? It deserves its own Instagram account. It's the place where you can take a date and still afford the bus ride home The true star of the show is the Spoons app. It's like having a magic wand. A few taps and abracadabra, a pint appears! It's the pub where you can enjoy a night out without your bank account giving you the cold shoulder the next morning. It's a customer friendly, carpet loving place.
A decent spoons. Cheap beers, good food for a decent price. Perfect for the occasional dinner, afternoon tea or pre drinks before a night out. Toilets are so spacious and well kept, tables aren’t always clean when you sit, but staff are always happy to wipe down. Service is on the app, with a short wait delivery. Love a spoons
