About us

Nicholson’s Pubs are known for their individual style, exciting stories, and charming personalities — and The Swan is certainly no exception.

Built in 1901 as a hotel on the site of an old coaching inn, The Swan is famous for inspiring artists. For centuries 'The Swan' has mastered serving perfect drinks and excellent food down to a fine art, and its colourful history has always been adorned by artistry in a variety of forms. Its first portrait was as a coaching inn known as the 'Old Swan', functioning as the first stop from the City of London in 18th Century, refurbishment then fashioned it into the 'White Swan', while later renovations shaped it into the Swan Hotel. However, the railways arrival in Hammersmith meant demolishing the original premises, and the current building was designed from a blank canvas.

The Swan has always been central to travellers, feeding their imagination during their stay. Those who stayed longer made the town into the home for creative industries, such as The Silver Studio that designed textile patterns for Liberty of London.

The rich tapestry of this inspirational home also attracted great luminaries of the Arts & Crafts movement, such as William Morris and also Edward Johnstone, designer of the famous London Underground "Bulls Eye" symbol. This artistic heritage also extended to Gustav Holst, (composer of the Planets) whose composition 'Hammersmith' reflected his impressions of the town where he worked.

Take a moment to absorb the decoration and beautiful architecture, over two floors, and enjoy a fine selection of quality British food and drink, just like the great artists before you — you just might be inspired to design something wonderful too!.

We are a family of three, were in London for Christmas but no family here to spend it with so we booked here for Christmas lunch. Food was fantastic and great atmosphere with good service. Would do this again.

Lovely and busy corner pub right outside Hammersmith Station. Been here a few times but this time we ordered dinner. Found a quiet table upstairs and ordered from the QR code menu. She had Chase Pink Grapefruit and Pomelo G&T (delicious!) and the Puy Lentil Cottage Pie which was cooked perfectly, the lentils were soft and the sauce was flavorful. I had a Nicholson's Original G&T (a classic!) and the Lamb Shank Shepherd's Pie which was piping hot with warm delicious gravy. The Lamb was quite good and lacked the gameyness some Lamb has. We will definitely return!

We came for a classic Sunday roast, having heard many good things about it and seen it advertised outside this pub located just outside Hammersmith station. Unfortunately, nothing to write home about. Service: We booked a table for lunch, and we had to speak to the bartender to announce our arrival as nobody welcomed us. There is nobody to take your order: you order online via QR code and have to pay in advance via credit card/apple pay etc. And are also given a request for service tip (what service?). The only moment a server came to check whether the food was OK was at the end, at which point it doesn't really matter anymore. Food: we got the Roast sirloin of beef. Quality was ok, but nothing more: we were expecting more from such a traditional meal. Price was OK, but the quantity of meat seemed a bit lacking compared to the whole dish. Ambience: the pub looks nice and welcoming, definitely gives you the feel of something with a lot of history. If we were to come again, it would only be to try the famous awarded pie(s).

Popped in for a quick pint on our journey and ended up having a few. Ordered a Nachos and thoroughly enjoyed it. Staff were fantastically friendly and welcoming. Background music was a joy on the ears, some proper old school tunes. We will definitely be back. We went back and it did not disappoint us. Our travels take us away but we will return soon. Thank you Swan

Had lunch with friends on a Monday Lunchtime. It was very quiet The decor is gorgeous, rich wooden mouldings, the Staff were nice. The food arrived quickly, I had the lentil and vegetable cottage pie which was so tasty! My friend had a pie and mash, though they accidentally forgot the gravy in the gravy boat. I had the caramel biscuit torte for dessert, which was very sweet and the coffee was very bitter. But otherwise fine. They didn't have any alternative milk - just semi skimmed, don't know if this is a permanent thing but that wasn't very vegan friendly - if you are. The female toilets needed love, the lock was broken in the one cubicle. There was no soap and the hand-dryer was broken - with no hand towels to dry your hands. Overall, nice enough experience
