About us

It stands on the site of The Shambles (or market) which occupied three sides of the site. The Corn Exchange opened for business in July 1862. The floor in the hall was inserted in 1969, and there are now shops on the ground floor. These premises were refurbished in June 2010.

Short visit on a midweek morning was pleasant enough. Food acceptable & ale as usual in good condition. It being a rather large area atmosphere was lacking, seating not overly comfortable but acceptable. Access is by several stairs, but there is a lift at the side of building although this isn't clearly signed & easily missed. The lavatories are on same level & post code as bar & seating area which is unusual for a Spoons. £8.70 for a English Breakfast and a pint of Stout-Porter is as usual very acceptable !

Had to wait nearly an hour for the food to arrive, when they did the chips were cold as they obviously had been sitting out for ages. We ordered drinks to the table via the app and they were sat out by the pick up point for ages and we ended up going to get the drinks ourselves, as the staff were doing other orders instead.

Weatherspoons Bury St Edmunds: Wow what a building. Nearly walked past this magnificent building when we noticed the signage. Entry can be through a side door for disabled and those with prams. Otherwise a grand entry at the front of the building by two side staircases. Large airy building, good seating spaces with comfortable chairs. Absolutely packed with people. Inexpensive menu with selection of basic meals and snacks. Drinks pricing very competitive. Note your table number, then order at the bar. Staffing and waiting time excellent, no long queues even at 12 noon. Toilets modern and clean. An experience worth having. Enhanced by the heritage of a well kept building!

It was reasonably busy when we arrived, with a good atmosphere, always a good sign. It was recommended to eat here due to the venue, and that didn't disappoint as the corn exchange is a lovely building. Staff & facilities. The bar staff were friendly, unfortunately the same could not be said for the waiter, who shall we say, offered limited acknowledgement. The place was clean enough. There are plenty of toilets, unfortunately, several looked blocked, I think I looked in 5. Being on the first floor there's also a lift, but, doubt, 8 people could comfortably fit inside. But it has one. Food & drink Unlimited coffee, always good. There appeared to be several groups of people sitting near the bar, just out for drinks too. The menu is that of a Weather Spoons, with the puddings bordering on the American style, although most weren't available. The food was adequate. The person who ordered the steak wasn't asked how they wanted it cooked. The extra sides added to a meal randomly and not necessarily the right one. The food was nice enough. The halloumi was rubbery as it was slightly over cooked. The were chips limited. The side of scampi was the best in size and taste. That was yum. The deserts/puddings again ok, after choosing from the remaining options. Yes, I would go there again for the atmosphere and building, it's also reasonably priced. But, would choose different menu options, and would definitely order the scampi!

Had to review my review again as I feel something has changed for the better. The quality of the food that's coming out of the kitchen has improved. The plates are not as cold as previously stated in my last review of the place. Staff are and have always been friendly and helpful and the only thing I can say is I do miss when someone used to come to my table and ask if everything was okay with the meal. The removal of this personal touch has probably been made from way up above but it was nice and at times important. Overall I think the establishment is working constantly to improve their standards and that deserves a few more stars.
