About us

Getting to the Black Lion takes you across the canal and over the Churnet Valley Railway line with Consall station approximately 100yds away and in full view from the beer garden. The canal, snaking underneath the railway line, coupled with the pleasant roar of the river falling over a weir and the wonderful tree clad valley sides it is a heavenly place to sit and relax.

Finding us is really quiet straightforward though it does look difficult. By road you can take the A52 from Stoke-on-Trent and head out towards Cellar Head/ Kingsley Moor. Once past Cellarhead you take the A522 and head up towards Wetley Rocks. Either the first or the second right will take you into Consall village and from there follow the signs for the Black Lion. There is a car park for the pub which is a short walk over the canal and the railway line which could potentially be a problem for the more disabled customer.

If you wish to visit us by canal boat nothing could be easier. There are moorings right outside the pub across the railway lines at Consall Forge. We plan to eventually provide a Wireless link to the internet at the Pub for the benefit of all Canal users and a visit to www.boatmail.co.uk may provide a useful source of information for you.

I really don’t know how this place has so many reviews in the last few years of walking this area im yet to see this place open, Until today we saw a sign stating they were open serving hot drinks oatcakes etc So off we went On arrival the decor of the black lion on the outside is messy it could really do with an update and just a general tidy There was a waitress another lady and a gent and not one person said hello to me Just looked up and carried on what they were doing I felt so awkward that I went back to my husband to ask if he’d ask for drinks as I felt so unwelcome My partner went to order us a cup of tea and hot chocolate Walked over to the gent and lady who again didn’t even look up at him He asked if he could order some drinks to be told they wasn’t opening for half an hour That’s fine I can adhere to opening times Maybe some opening times on your little sign Maybe a polite hello. Anything. The waitress was doing a good job of wiping the same table though! Keep up the good work black lion Really looks like your business and customer service is booming.

Brilliant place, so scenic and interesting. It's a real shame that the actual pub isn't open due to fire damage, but the staff do a fantastic job with the outside bar. Food is available, too. Cracking place to visit xxx

Great little pub, great food for lunch and nice beer. Sitting outside in the sun it's hard to beat this place. There is a car park, but it's also a nice place to stop if you're walking along the canal.

Lovely pub with nice choice of drinks. Lovely food and cakes. There is a covered outside seating area with plenty of seating which is ideal. A made-up tyre place for children to amuse themselves. Worth a visit when on the railway
