This half-timbered end-terrace pub is one of the oldest hostelries in the town; the building dates back to mid-17th-century and was originally a prison.
The interior is now an open plan single room with some old oak beams retained towards the rear. Outdoor drinking is limited to a few tables and chairs at front in fine weather. Live music some Friday evenings and every Saturday evening. No pub car park, but public car parks nearby.
It's a bit of a shame that some money isn't spent on the toilets (mens), which are horrible, smelly, dirty and unloved. The reason it's 3 star, is the fact that it's now a Burton bridge pub! The way the music was being played was a bit untidy too. Could be better, would be on the pub's school report.
Just reopened and needing to find it's feet. Beer was ok (went flat a little quicker than I would have liked). Staff are friendly and there's a reasonable selection of drinks available.
Landlord unprofessional and rude, not a very nice atmosphere, felt very unwelcome, finished my drink and left, won't be returning. Nothing like it was before which is a real shame. Edit: i see the landlord has replied! To anyone reading it, wouldn't you think it was strange the landlord wasn't there when it opened? Rather than taking accountability, he will carry on acting childish and unprofessional.
A bit pricey but a decent pint. Very quiet during the day, can get busy on a weekend if there is a good band playing. *** UPDATE 20. 09.2023 *** The Old Royal Oak has pulled its final pint and closed. Hopefully, it will reopen soon and make its mark as a rock pub again.
Incredible pub. These owners know their gins, rums and beers. Biggest choice of gins with something for everyone. The staff offered recommendations throughout, each time offering something different. The rums again, different to what you will see anywhere. The beers were superb with a full mix from pales through to stouts. The pub does homemade pizzas which I will definitely be trying next time. The pub is very clean and well presented inside. This place offers something different to all the other places in Burton. I would recommend the pub and I will definitely be returning when next in Burton.

It re-opened as a pub on 9th June 2016. Its new name is an oblique reference to Michael Arthur Bass, the first Lord Burton and great grandson of William Bass, founder of the Bass Brewery.

Titanic beers well represented on the bar here. Settled for the Iceberg which was cool, to say the least. Went down well with the Lamb Rogan Josh.
