About us

Not being tied to a brewer or owned by a chain means being able to select the best beers, wines and fresh produce, ensuring great food and drink at a fair price.

The Soldiers Return has been a Basingstoke institution for many years, however a decline in trade led to the owners The Wellington Pub Group to close up in 2011 and seek planning permission to develop the land for housing. Planning denied, the vacant pub stood empty for 2 years until the current lease holders restored the pub to its former glory.

Dedicated to the idea of a traditional pub being the centre of a community, The Soldiers Return offers a welcoming atmosphere to all, with three rooms and two bars providing a home to a range of Clubs and providing a venue, as well as catering for numerous Events. At the front of the pub is the lounge bar, opening up to a patio area overlooking the Sherborne Playing Field, while at the rear is a spacious and family friendly sports bar housing a pool table, darts board and gaming machines. Leading through from the sports bar is a dining area allowing you a quieter space in which to enjoy a meal from the Menu. Free Wifi is available throughout the pub, as well as Sky Sports on numerous flatscreens, and plenty of parking is available in both the attached car park and at Sherborne Playing Fields opposite.

Used the private room for a wake. Staff were excellent with a good selection of food. Great value on the room hire rate. Would use again

I went to this pub for the first time to celebrate my mate's 20th birthday and the place was amazing. The service was spot on and everyone was super friendly. Even the bar owner talked to me about the different types of ale they had on tap and was happy to see younger people who were muture in his pub. So I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking to try some drinks at a new pub

Great location and the locals seemed welcoming, although like most public houses it is clicky. The landlord was friendly and quick to serve. The lady of the house was unnecessarily rude and bolshie so we left after one drink! The cost of one round ( 3 drinks ) was very expensive. I will not be returning to this pub and I certainly wont be recommending it.
