Imagine the perfect coastal pub. A stroll from the beach, open log fires in winter, light and airy in summer with sheltered sun traps outside in Autumn and Spring to enjoy off season sunshine. Paired with simple, beautifully cooked food - of the season and of the place, all washed down with a pint of beer or a glass of pinot.

Went to the restaurant there. The decor was nice. The staff were really slow and one member of staff was really abrasive. Myself and my partner had the roast dinner. It was dreadful. The beef was thin and tough to eat, the ‘roast’ potatoes were soggy, the veg was overcooked, the Yorkshire puddings were burnt and the gravy was a bog standard bisto. Probably the worst Roast dinner I have ever had. I could have got better from a Toby Carvery.
Stayed for 2 nights, 15 & 16 Jan. Welcoming and very helpful staff and, generally, a very comfortable stay. The only downside was a problem with the gas supply which meant no heating or hot water in most rooms (including ours) on our second day & night - not ideal during a particularly cold snap. It might have been a nice gesture if the hotel company had offered some sort of discount when we checked out to reflect this discomfort.
We stayed mid-December with our dog. Overall - good. However, at this price point I shall be picky. Stayed in main building, room smallish, but perfectly adequate. Bar service slow aka no-one behind bar, it appeared staff were off doing other tasks. Breakfast service again slow, not offered toast and my full English was, erm, small and not great, either slightly over-cooked or left under heat lamp. We'd stay again (in warmer weather) simply for the location, but a few tweaks would greatly enhance the experience. Our dog Sid loved it.
We really enjoyed our stay which was extended to 5 nights, the rooms were excellent, the staff friendly and welcoming, in particular the lady who looked after the housekeeping - what a star you have there. Thank you for helping me with my food challenges, it made our Christmas lunch perfect and our friends who joined us were very impressed with the attention to customer satisfaction and how friendly the staff are - a credit to the Ship.
The pub really needs somewhere comfortable to sit and relax. A lounge for residents would be most welcome. Especially staying over busy Christmas period. We were really looking forward to it and sorry to say we were disappointed especially after staying in a snug room at the black lion earlier in the year, where the room was small but so comfortable and nicely decorated That said, the food was great and the staff very friendly.
