When Shaw and Crompton was a booming mill town, the Wakes holidays traditionally started on the first Saturday after 13 August. In the words of the dialect song Shaw Wake, it was a chance to ‘lay aside aside yur wheel un loom’ and head for ‘Shay Wake’, where ‘Thur’s flying boxus, boats, and shows, Un fruit, un pies, un tay cakes’. ‘Here’s a pig cun wissle tunes’ and ‘Red herrins con yur fortin tell’. In fact, ‘Thur’s every thin ut Shay Wake’.
The food is good at a good price and the beer is cheap and cheerful. Only down side is the Guinness I had last time smelled a bit like wet dog. The glass washer just needs cleaning out more often.
Nice clean pub, friendly staff, nice welcoming atmosphere… but the Guinness was only just drinkable. It was fizzy not smooth and the head was thin and watery. 2/10
The busiest Spoons we have been in, which is great for pub life and British culture. My first order at the bar. A pint of Stout and a half of Carling. A young lass was serving me the pint, and a lad put the half Carling in front of me...teamwork at its best!...Well done Shay Wake team..
Awful food. Ordered 2 steaks which were all gristle and fat. Manager refused to do anything about it saying the steaks are "CHEAP" and come like that. An absolute disgrace. Do not deserve the business! The worst one they took away and binned it so I couldn't take a picture of that!
We went for tea last night and it was steak night , we both ordered medium and they both came out burnt yes burnt, sent them back and they came back not much better but at least they were warm unlike the rest ofc the dish the chips, peas and onion rings all came back cold. Having eating at Shay Wake numerous times and never had food as bad as this I’m wondering if its been a change of kitchen team as they need to bring the old team back looking around at other tables they was a lot of food left on other plates as well. On the plus side the manager was really good and offered us a free drink and refunded us back the price of our meal.
