About us

Shakespeares re-opened on the 20th July 2011, just in time for the Tramlines Music Festival, after an 18 month period of closure after the well known live music venue was closed by Punch Taverns in early 2010. The pub was rescued by Real Ale & Music fan William Wagstaff, of The New Beehive Inn in Bradford and extensively refurbished and restored to its former glory as a Georgian Coaching Inn.

Situated on the famous Don Valley real ale trail between Kelham Island and the city center, since opening Shakespeares has firmly established itself on the real ale map of Sheffield, and in the first six months after reopening the doors served over 300 different real ales from near and far, always featuring locALE on the bar from Sheffield's excellent breweries as well as new and rare beers from across the UK. In addition to the handpulled ales, the pub features a supurb selection of draught continental lagers, Belgian fruit beer and German hefe weissen and a changing guest American Craft Beer. There are also 30+ bottled beers from Norwegian Baltic Porter to Belgian Trappist Beers brewed by Monks and extremely hoppy American IPA's and a spirit range including over 80 Single Malt Scotch Whiskies, 10 Caribbean Rums, many of them barrel aged and a selection of premium Bourbon, Gin and Vodka. Pub Managers Chris and Robin are passionate about providing the highest quality no matter what your choice of tipple and the staff are happy to offer advice and recomendations.

Shakespeares other major string in its bow is Live Music. The Bards Bar upstairs frequently hosts up and coming live acts from Sheffield and beyond and there is regular folk music downstairs in the pub, including Reg & Friends open folk session every Wednesday and Crazy Crow Traditional Gaelic Folk every other Tuesday. See the Live Music Section of the website for full listings. The Bard's Bar is also available to hire for private parties - please email us below or call on 0114 2755959 for details.

Shakespeares always provides a friendly welcome, whether you're here for the beer, the music, weekly events such as the Thursday Night Quiz, featuring the infamous Shakespeare Round, a social gathering or a quiet drink.

Another one of the best craft pubs I've been to in Sheffield. Thank christ there's a bit of distance between them, to keep things interesting!

Our first visit there last night. Everything you want from a good traditional pub. Very welcoming informative staff. Wide choice of ales, beers and whisky's. Full of character with lots of nice rooms/areas in the pub and a lovely beer garden. Live entertainment events upstairs. We didn't have food so will give stars for food on another visit. We'll definitely go again

Tremendous pub with real character, a great beer selection and friendly staff. A pity we only had time for one, but we loved the beer garden and will definitely come back.

Friendly old-school pub, with a great selection of ales on tap. Ales regularly change and include a good mix of pale, bitter, stouts and craft etc. Apparently 80 whiskies available too. Atmospheric decor of old brewery pump clips and memorabilia. Toilets were clean. There's an outside courtyard. Sausage rolls/pork pies and crisps available.

Excellent Sheffield pub near the Kelham Island Museum. Eight cask beers on handpump when I visited including three imperial stouts ranging in strength from 10.6 to 12.0 abv! Lots of outdoor seating some of it covered.
