The Scran & Scallie, which received a prestigious Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide 2017 showcases a seasonal menu in line with the ‘From Nature to Plate’ philosophy of the gastro-pub. Modern dishes such as Fish & Chips, Fish pie and Sunday Roast are served alongside some forgotten classics such as Sheep's Heid Scotch Broth, traditional Cottage pie, Chicken liver parfait and Eton mess to name a few.
The pub is open 7 days a week serving lunch, bar ‘scran’ and dinner as well as an extensive drinks menu throughout the day.
Breakfast is served from 830-11am on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year.
The rustic but charming interior of the pub features many of the old features of the building, refreshed with modern Scottish accents and a hint of Scandinavian influences. Furnishings are distressed and reclaimed with tartan and tweeds, adding character and bringing the original interior back to life. Fabrics from the Isle of Bute mixed up with exposed original brickwork and natural tones are sitting alongside tactile Scandinavian finishings and wallpaper by Scottish design duo Timorous Beasties.
The Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand is awarded to an establishment defined as 'exceptional good food at moderate prices'
The Scran & Scallie is located on one floor and has wheel chair access. We do not operate a dress code.

Had my bday dinner here. It was incredible. I heartily recommend the cured salmon & rye—out of this world. Take your time eating this food, because you get hints of layered flavors at the back end of each dish. I also loved my cod special. Make sure to walk down the street and check out the Speakeasy as well—best bar we discovered in Edinburgh! & although it might seem dark & dicey at night, we walked here from the old town area and it was a nice walk, if you’re able to do a longer walk.
Great food, totally appropriate for a gastro pub with hearty portions and very attentive staff. The only downside was, despite us booking at 9pm there was a very noisy child on the next table throughout the meal, possibly encouraged by having the children’s area. I would suggest this might be closed earlier as it really did spoil the experience
I came here twice. The first day I tried the patè with the apple chutney. My partner had the code special (with parsnip 3 ways and the cockles) and I had the fish pie 🤤 that was the best fish pie ever. The next day we came back for the steak and ale pie. Which was equally as good. It was perfectly balanced. Hearty and was not overpowered by salt. For dessert I opted for the sticky toffee pudding. I loved every bite. I couldn’t breathe properly from over eating but it was worth it.
A must-to-go restaurant for high-quality food, that excellently embodies the Scottish tradition. Ambience and service: We received a heart-warming welcome in a homey atmosphere and were kindly helped throughout the dinner. Food: The high-quality food was a great representation of Scottish tradition and worth of fine dining experience. We had the haggis, scallops and salmon (starters), beef cheek and wagyu burger (main) and dessert. We found all dishes incredibly testing, and we firmly recommend them. Price: It’s not a cheap option, but not overpriced and is well-priced compared to many other places in Edinburgh. It was our first time in the city, and this dinner made our experience even more special!
Probably the best value for money option I had during my trip to Edinburgh. The fish pie, the haggis and the sticky pudding were exceptional! Everything else we tried was also really good. My only objection was with the meat pie as I believe it needed more seasoning maybe but nonetheless I was more than eager to eat it. If I am ever back in Edinburgh, this place will be the first on my list to revisit!
