The Salisbury Arms Hotel’s history dates back into the 18th Century when the building was known as The Bell. It became part of the McMullen family in 1891 and is very much at the heart of the Hertford drinking, dining and sleeping “scene”.

Sunday Lunch Poor and inattentive service. Staff on phones! Had to ask for drinks. Had to ask for menus. This is basic basic stuff. Oh, and when I asked for the menus the young lady made some comment under her breath about them being on the next door table. Perhaps I am old fashioned but isn't that her job! Food ok but to be honest it is not the cheapest place and there is better out there for the same money. The roast is £22 and if you take out the Yorkshire pud there is not a lot there. Read other reviews. Three drinks, no starters, no deserts, absolutely no extras and £89.98 inc 10% for three people. One single G & T £7.20 On the plus side I was a walk in and the staff found me a table. They were busy (probably full) but a little bit more attention required. This was my first visit and I am not sure I would return. Pity because I live locally and I like Hertford.
Went there Sunday evening for Roast dinner. Disaster, worst meal I've had in years. Easiest meal ever. Beef tough and cold Gravy like wallpaper paste. Veg over cooked so little of it. Potatoes 3 small ones like bullets. Served cold Sent back. Came back more globby gravy dry and looked very unappetising. Worst experience
Arrived for a 2:30 booking (9 people) waited 30min for table!! Pre-ordered food came out sporadically, waited 10 more mins for child's meal. Meals came out missing items! long wait for those. Service lacking!! We were then informed table booked and we needed to leave no mention of this when we first sat down. Speed and accuracy of meals needs to be addressed if you want fast table turnover....
Awoken at 6am on first night by dustcart literally under room it was there for 28 minutes!! Also lots of loud banging from front door, during closing and after. Unfortunately our room seemed to be right over this area. Food in the restaurant was good quality produce, regrettably both breakfast we had were more than a little overdone, the home made hash brown exploded over my plate! We had a family meal in the restaurant, I'm afraid the service was slow and not good. Beware of the service charge on the bill, for a £400+ meal they had put £43 service charge on the bill!!! We challenged this and it was removed, leaving us to decide what tip the service should be. Certainly not £43 we should not be charged this amount automatically. we aren't in USA where servers don't get paid a wage and rely on tips. It should be up to the diner to tip the amount they feel their service deserves.
Since the refurbishment, we have been quite disappointed with the quality of the restaurant and service. We’ve been coming to Salisbury Arms for ages to enjoy their delicious and good value food; we even had one of our wedding events here back when Sharon was around. We’ve been to eat a few times since the refurb and have had terrible service each time. No one greets on entry, we had to ask the bar to send over a server when we’d been waiting to order for over 15 minutes, and we’ve had some mistakes on the drink orders. No quality checks were done once we finally got our meals to make sure we had everything we needed. The prices have also gone up significantly so we were expecting top quality service. The food itself is good but not worth it for the overall experience. Such a shame as it is a beautiful spot in Hertford.

In 1911, number 76 Fore Street was home to a number of local surgeons and physicians including Dr. Ernest Richard Evans and Dr. E Shelly who carried out their business in one of the grand ten rooms of the building.
