For more than 60 years, these premises were the Royal British Legion, having been acquired in the late 1940s from Captain Noel Newton. Newton served in the army during World War I with the rank of captain, then major – and was awarded the Military Cross. He was later a member of Rutland County Council. The premises are built onto a surviving part of The Limes – a grand house named after the tall trees in its walled garden.
It's a wetherspoons, so pretty standard. The staff were friendly and attentive, so no complaints there. Tables were cleared promptly so 👍
My family went here for dinner, The staff were great and we enjoyed ourselves. However, our food was not enjoyable in the slightest. My fiancé and I had the vegan beyond burger. Our 4 year old was feeling absolutely fine before eating here but after he had a margarita pizza and apple juice he complained of an upset stomach. On the way home he went pale in the face and projectile vomited all over the car and again at home. I can’t say for sure if it was the pizza or the apple juice that has made him unwell. But it was definitely something from this particular Whetherspoons.
Very understaffed so drinks orders were very slow and food orders even slower. The staff who were in were nice, but at Christmas you would think they would put more staff on. The food was not good - one person received cold meat, I had my initial order cancelled as they didn’t have the food available and my replacement order was clearly just low quality frozen food (anaemic peas and watery scampi). The food was not priced to reflect this.
Nice relaxing atmosphere. Friendly staff good food
Spoons #131 return visit, nice outside seating area in the sun, accessible areas, no parking except on street free for an hour Had a burger and skinny burgundy for a change, very adequate for lunch
