About us

Our chefs are hardworking and ready to prepare those comforting favourites for you after a long day of exploring or just for a nice meal out with your loved ones.

Our bar staff and servers are caring and friendly, and we are always trying to bring you the best and most personal service we can. To us, there is nothing nicer than making our customers’ days special and better than when they came in! On offer here at The Royal Oak, we have an amazing selection of cask ales and fine lagers for you to choose from. We also have an extensive premium gin selection, with Fever Tree tonic offered to accompany your gin of choice.

Also available, is our free-to-hire 15th century function room; a gorgeous space with a lovely atmosphere for your party or meeting! (Let us know if you see our resident ghost!) If that doesn’t entice you yet, we have a cozy snug, which is a lovely room for smaller groups to eat or drink in. The main dining area of our pub is full of little nooks to enjoy, with fairy lights creating a calm and relaxing space to have dinner and spend time in. As winter approaches, we start turning on our roaring fires in the front and back bars. So welcome; enjoy a whiskey, wine or ale with us as the best time of the year comes around. We can’t wait! See you soon.

Dropped our daughter back to York for Uni after Christmas and popped in here for late lunch. Had read the reviews, a bit mixed but liked the look of the pub. Hubby had steak n ale pie, I had Sunday lunch (chicken and beef), daughter had the vegan burger. Food came in good time and it was really nice. Fab Yorkshire pudding and lovely cooked veg (green beans, leeks and carrots. Hubby said the pie was good and served with fat chunky chips. Only negative, no-one checked if everything was ok with the meal and no offer of sauces like mint/mustard. I would return though 🙂

We arrived earlier than our booking so we were able to sit upstairs and gave some drinks whilst we waited. We booked online. We sat in the bar restaurant. We had a table for four. We sat near another table but enough space between the two. It was a cosy pub. Staff were friendly. Clean environment. Toilets upstairs on third floor. The food was delicious. A nice variety of choice. All four meals were incredible. Recommend if visiting to York.

Nice traditional pub with friendly staff. The only let down was the food. The batter on the fish was doughy and not crisp as it should be. The garden peas tasted old and bitter as can be seen in the photo. My company's mashed potatoes were wet and rumpy. sausage had a weird taste. They need a cook who actually knows about cooking. Don't come here for food, that's for sure.

Great location with very ambient space. Comfortable seating and cool interior. The food looked great but did not taste the best. The roast beef was very over cooked and dry. The vegetables were also over cooked and chewy. The other food looked better but I can’t say for sure. All in all, not the best Sunday dinner but still an interesting building.

Fantastic!! Rump was tasty, great Yorkshire pudding, peppercorn sauce gravy awesome. Tomahawk pork chop special was delicious, perfectly cooked. Chicken ham hock pie was really good. Great service, nice for families or for adults, great little niches for everyone!
