The Royal Oak is located in the centre of the Pembrokeshire town and fishing ferry port of Fishguard. The pub is famous for its place in history as in 1797, the French unsuccessfully attempted an invasion on the west coast of Wales only to be thwarted by the locals, this was the last invasion attempt on Britain. A peace treaty was signed between the British and French in the bar area. The pub has been recently refurbished and decorated with exposed stone and wooden beams. The Royal Oak welcomes families and is open for food everyday of the year except Christmas Day.
Visited on 23/12/23 with friends while staying in Fishguard. I ordered the Glamorgan Sausages & Mash dish (suitable for vegetarians). Tasty cheese & leek sausages on a bed of mash, plus a pint of "Desperate Dai" amber ale - smooth and moreish! Very busy night, customer wise.
Lovely freshly prepared food, we had the fish and chips, good sized portion and reasonably priced. Lots of history on the pub within the restaurant. Staff were friendly and welcoming too.
A very lively little pub, even on a Monday night, and a very friendly mixed crowd of all ages. I loved the historic 'long house' building, with its low beamed ceiling and stone walls...and of course the thought that major historic events had taken place there. The staff were very efficient and friendly, the food was very fresh and in generous portions, and the wine list was better than the average. Highly recommended!
The food tasted really nice. The portion could have been bigger, but overall the combination of all seafoods together in the meal with the sauce might it delicious.
This is a beautiful old building, full of history and character, both inside and out. We wandered in around 7ish. The food was good, reasonably priced, and plenty of it, great for those with a hearty appetite :0) I had the belly draft whilst my partner in hunger had the seafood platter, minus the squid. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. They were friendly, and the atmosphere was relaxed. The tables were not crammed together, and although the pub wasn't that big, it felt spacious. Loved the roaring fire. Was dog friendly when we went as there were a couple of well-behaved furry friends enjoying the atmosphere too. Will definitely be returning here, hopefully on a night with live music.
