ABOUT THE ROYAL OAK, BARRINGTON

In a nutshell: 14th Century Pub & Restaurant; Beautiful Village; Largest village green in Europe; Unstuffy; Oysters; Classic Pub Restaurant menu includes Pie and Steak; Sustainable fresh fish, Roast Sunday lunch; Four local real ales; Focussed wine list; Cocktails; Cheery & professional team.

The Royal Oak is a grade 2* listed building and sits on a fine expanse of Village Green, apparently the longest in Europe. Barrington, a delightful village is equidistant between Cambridge to the North and Royston to the South (both 7 miles). We are close to Duxford War Museum and Wimpole Farm, easily accessible from the A10 and A603. Bones of the hippo, rhino, elephant, hyena, lion, bear and bison have been discovered here. There’s also evidence of Stone Age and Bronze Age settlements, Roman remains and extensive Anglo Saxon burial grounds. Barrington is also the home of what was known as the ‘National Loaf, sold nationally in Britain from 1942 onwards as part of the home front effort during World War II. It was first baked here, where the creator of it’s high vitamin content recipe, Dr Elsie Widdowson, lived. In short an interesting place with bags of history.

Please see below for our food and drink offer.

Dogs are always welcome in the pub area, where one can also eat if tables are available. The garden to the front on the green or to the left under the Oak and Walnut trees are wonderful spots to enjoy our hospitality.

Welcoming and lovely atmosphere. The staff were accommodating and friendly, we had a great chat. The food was fab, the best chips we had eaten in a long time. Sometimes you just want comfort and ambiance, The Royal Oak has this in spades. When we travel this way again we will visit again!

Heard great things about this place so gave it a go yesterday. Lovely pub, fire was on and friendly locals. I think I should of stayed in the bar and had the fish finger sandwich in hindsight as the food wasn't great. Hit and miss. Was £80 for the 2 of us, 2 drinks, 2 starters 2 mains. Quite pricey. Baked cambabert was great but paper thin dry bread only enough for half of the cheese. Calamari OK. Mrs had the pie, was great. She ate the whole thing but the flat iron steak very unpleasant. I don't think they seasoned it AT ALL. Then they cut it through the middle which I really insist you don't do. Ordered it medium but it was basically rare and plate was pooled with blood. As a chef, you cut it open saw it was raw inside and STILL sent it out... no excuse. I could count the chips, I had 7. The peppercorn sauce was like water and tasted like cream. No Peppercorn flavouring I could of poured it on a apple crumble. I ate a few mouthfuls and I gave up chewing. Can't be bothered to complain, wrapped it up and took it home. What makes me laugh is even the dog struggled to chew through it. But at least somebody got enjoyment out of the £30. Fish and chips and the burgers went past looked amazing I may come back and just keep it simple with a burger.

Great food! Very high quality. Lovely roast, fish and chips are great. I had the burger that was really good. Lovely staff and beautiful setting. Outside is great in the summer. One of my favourite pubs in Cambridge. Pie filling was too salty eat though, though I’m sure that was an on the day oversight. Be great if you could check that with the kitchen.

Fantastic pub/restaurant! The staff here were really welcoming, the looked after us and our dog really well. Lauren was fantastic and a credit to the team here! The pub manager was also very friendly and accommodating. This venue is really cozy, the food is delicious and good value. I'd recommend a selection of the small plates for Tapas dining. We really enjoyed dining here and looking forward to coming back again.

Lovely, homely & welcoming cottage pub! Popped in for a quick bite, thinking it'll be another country pub but was pleasantly suprised by the quality of not only the food, but the venue and professionalism of our waiter. Would definitely recommend!
