About us

Today the inn has been lovingly restored as part of a multi-million-pound investment, providing eleven en-suite rooms, many of which have retained unique original features.

Part of the pub is the former cottage which was famed for producing nettle beer.

We’ve come a long way since our days as a grain store. In the 1900s, the inn became renowned for its nettle beer.

Today, we offer six different ales each month, so you don’t have to make do with the same old tipple if you don’t want to. Why not try something new while you’re here?

We serve wines, spirits and cocktails, too, so you can pair wines from across the world with your meals, thanks to the suggestions on the menu. Refresh yourself with some of the best gins around or order a cocktail and sip something classy.

My first time at The Royal. My partner and I made an impulsive decision to have lunch out. We moved to Middleton a little while ago and I was yet to try this pub. My partner had a Christmas meal here with friends and raved about it! We were seated at a lovely table with a view of the lane. It was fairly quiet. Busier in bar area. Lovely interior. Very clean and you knew you were in a higher class of establishment. The manager (I think) was super friendly and attentive. Menu really excellent. A little more pricey than your average pub, but this is not your average pub and the quality is superb. I chose the pie of the day (cheese and onion) Absolutely to die for! Gorgeous mash, greens and gravy. I enjoyed every mouth full. Partner had fish, chips, peas and home made tartar sauce. Exceptional. I highly recommend this pub. We have decided it's now our favourite place to eat so far since we moved here. Can't wait to go back maybe for an evening meal this time. I would even book a room here as a little treat, they look so nice (but no bath which I always look for in a stay) Thank you so much for such a lovely lunch! You made us happy 😊 see you again soon.

This was the best roast I had for a long time!! I don't think I'd go anywhere else (even though we came from Lancaster) and I mentioned two of the parties were vegan, while doing the booking, they made special nut roast for them... It can get pretty busy, so booking recommended!!

Staff were caring and genuinely helpful. Room was large and well decorated with comfortable super king-size bed. Liked the coffee machine. Great ensuite shower room too. Delicious, generous lunch, dinner and breakfast, wish we could have stayed longer than one night. Heysham village is beautiful with fabulous views. We hope to return.

A Royal Retreat of Excellence! Our recent stay at the Royal Hotel in Heysham was nothing short of a regal delight! The staff, from check-in to departure, exemplified the epitome of hospitality. Seamless check-in and a warm escort to our rooms set the tone for a remarkable experience. The rooms were a testament to top-notch refurbishment, boasting quality fixtures and fittings. The ample tea and coffee provisions, along with the thoughtful touch of fresh milk, added a sweet touch to our stay. Alasdair, the General Manager, was a gem during checkout, ensuring our stay met expectations and addressing any concerns. The breakfast was a hearty highlight, served with excellence and a smile. Kudos to the entire team—bar staff, cleaners, and beyond—for making our royal sojourn absolutely fantastic. We're already planning our return to this exquisite haven!

A fabulous 2 day trip thanks to The Royal at Heysham and to the team. The arrived fairly late to a warm welcome and an offer of fresh milk for our coffee machine. The room was lovely, clean and fresh. After a 5 hr drive from Somerset, The Royal was well worth the Drive. The next morning we enjoyed a great tasting breakfast in the characterful dining room, served by the friendly team. Then we are off to explore the Lakes. We had lunch in the lakes and decided to eat at the Royal, as it's always busy, we should have booked ahead, but not to worry, we readied to sample the menu outside in the lovely Bar Garden under the patio heaters, to our surprise the Manager has sorted us a table inside :) awesome ! The food was fantastic, the stay was too, we will be going back, Try the Royal at Heysham I would thoroughly recommend a stay.
