About us

The Rose & Crown is privately owned by the Robinson family who have farmed in Teesdale for four generations and also own and operate Headlam Hall Country Hotel & Spa which is located 15 miles down the dale from Romaldkirk.

Thomas Robinson and particularly his wife, Cheryl, take an active role in the day-to-day running of the Rose & Crown along with a great team of predominantly local staff who all play a key role in the high quality yet relaxed style of service offered.

Since purchasing the Rose & Crown in late 2012 there has been continual investment in both the front house and back house facilities with an emphasis on using local suppliers and trades. The style of interior improvements aims to balance the traditional feel of a country inn with contemporary touches but above all else the goal is to provide a place that customers find comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable.

Absolutely amazing, called in, wet and muddy with three dogs. We couldn't have been made more welcome. Dogs were given rigs to lie on, lovely warm fire to sit in front of and amazing service from a lovely lady Juliette. Will definitely be back

We are curently on holiday in Barnard Castle and having had a quiet drink yesterday at the Rose & Crown and seeing its beautiful restaurant, we decided to book a meal for my fiancées 30th Birthday. We arrived this evening only to be told that our table was around the corner of the bar and that the restaurant was booked up. My most fundamental issue with what has happened tonight is that when booking a table, at no point did the lady at the bar who took our booking, mention that there was a small seating area around the corner of the bar for dining and that in order to dine in the restaurant and not be shoved in the corner of the bar it had to be specifically requested at the point of booking. If we had been informed of the options appropriately by the staff taking the booking, we would of course have requested a table in the restaurant as planned. To say our experience this evening was disappointing is an understatement. The service was average (even discounting the complete failure of customer service at the point of booking) the food was OK but expensive for what it was and most disappointingly the atmosphere where we were put can politely be described as basic. The entire experience was a complete anticlimax and it really did sully my fiancée 30th Birthday and indeed everyone's evening. To add insult to injury we also had to ask for a 10% "gratuity" which was added to the bill without mention to be removed before paying.

We've been a few times now with our boisterous puppy and have always been made to feel welcome. Today we went for lunch minus our very large puppy and were treated to the most amazing food and service in the most perfect setting.

Stopped off for a quick drink whilst visiting Barnard Castle. Lovely cosy bar area, roaring open fire and reasonably priced drinks. Spotted the winter offer for the hotel Inc meals and accommodation, we'll definitely be booking 😀

Celebrated my 21st birthday here, had a fantastic meal and a large group of us were never made to feel an inconvenience in such a small venue. The service was friendly and very efficient but the real highlights were the food from lovely warm bread, an amazing sea food sharing board to start to some of the nicest hog roast sausages I’ve ever had and a beautiful brownie to finish. The wine was on the pricey side but I can’t emphasise enough how worth the journey this rural pub is
