The Ropemakers was built in the late eighteenth century by the Gundry family and was originally called The Sun Inn.
The building was refurbished by the Brewery in 1989 and the name changed to The Ropemakers to reflect Bridport's main industry as the World's biggest net making centre which was based on the other side of the road. In some ways The Ropemakers is a bit of a Tardis in that the building is much larger than it looks from the street as it stretches back and back ending in a pretty courtyard area that is popular with smokers and drinkers alike.
The current Landlords, John and Geraldine Baker have concentrated on good quality foodmade in their own kitchens from ingredients sourced from the best local suppliers. On Friday and Saturday evenings we offer an excellent live music scene featuring the best of the local groups plus various touring bands from as far afield as France. Every Tuesday we have a friendly fun quiz starting at 8:00pm with the winners winning a bottle of wine.
Love it here. Proper old school pub. Excellent place to see live music too. Great beer
Had the pleasure of going to the Ropemakers for a midweek lunch. It was a freezing cold day, but lovely and cosy in the bar. We ordered the soup special, which was roasted pepper soup with fresh soda bread, and a side of garlic chips. The service and attention to detail of all the staff was first rate. The food arrived, took about 15 minutes. And the bowls were nice and hot as was the soup, the flavour was pretty much perfect, slight kick of chilli, and a deep mix of flavours, really good. The bread was fresh and a generous portion with butter. And our side of garlic chips were as the soup was, lovely and hot, with a nice garlic mayonnaise and seasoning. We opted for coffee after our food, which was served in nice big mugs and also nice and hot. All and all we had a great meal, which we both agreed was also good value for money. Thank you chef for the great food, and the staff for their first class service.
We went today to have a small roast dinner, I had the beef brisket which melted in the mouth. My husband had the roast pork. Both meals were cooked to a tee. Service was faultless. The ropemakers is a warm friendly homely pub. Well worth a visit.
It's always a pleasure.... shame they don't serve food all day as I'm sure they could continue filling the seats but I fully understand people need time off! Great atmosphere and lots of local memorabilia
Lovely pub, friendly staff and wonderful local Palmers beers, brewed less than a mile down the road. We didn't eat but judging by the number of guests who were it's good fare.
