The Red Lion in Stevenage Old Town has long been a cherished establishment for locals and visitors alike, known for its vibrant atmosphere and music gigs that brought people from all over the country to enjoy memorable evenings. However, a change in management (maybe 12 - 18 months ago) has cast a shadow over the pub's once-thriving reputation, leaving patrons disillusioned and disheartened. The Decline in Management: For many years, The Red Lion was successfully managed by an individual who cultivated a welcoming and lively environment that drew patrons back time and time again. Unfortunately, this era came to an end when an inexperienced manager, formerly associated with The Doctor's Tonic in Welwyn Garden City, took the reins. Her arrival marked a significant shift in the pub's direction, leading to a series of decisions that left patrons questioning the future of their beloved venue. Altering the Musical Tradition: One of the most significant departures from the pub's successful formula was the abrupt cancellation of longstanding music gigs and the introduction of a new musical direction, driven solely by the personal taste of the new manager. This sudden change not only alienated loyal patrons who had come to expect a particular genre and atmosphere but also left them dismayed. The heart and soul of The Red Lion, its music scene, was being dismantled, and with it, the unique character of the pub. Scruffy Appearances and Unprofessionalism: Another concerning aspect of the new management is the perceived lack of professionalism and attention to detail. It has been observed that the new landlady sometimes appears at the pub on her days off, looking unkempt and carrying takeaway food with her. Such behavior raises questions about the commitment and dedication of the management, which should set a standard for the staff and patrons alike. Rude and Embarrassing Staff: Further contributing to the decline of The Red Lion is the behavior of the staff. Patrons have reported rudeness and an attempt to project a "quirky" image that often comes off as embarrassing rather than endearing. The transformation of the pub's staff culture has eroded the friendly and welcoming atmosphere that was once a hallmark of the establishment. Conclusion: The sad and unfortunate truth is that The Red Lion in Stevenage Old Town, once a thriving hub of music and community, now stands as a shadow of its former self. The misguided decisions of the inexperienced manager, from altering the music scene to failing to uphold professional standards, have alienated long-time patrons and visitors alike. The saying "if it's not broke, don't fix it" rings particularly true in this case, as an institution that had successfully cultivated a loyal following is now at risk of becoming a cautionary tale of mismanagement. The small group of locals who may support the new direction may be oblivious to the disappointment of those who have known and cherished The Red Lion for two decades. Whether the pub can ever fully recover its former glory remains a question, but it is clear that the changes instituted by the current management have left many patrons with a sense of loss and a desire to find a new venue that captures the spirit and ambiance that The Red Lion once offered.
