Becky and Andy have worked hard to get our village pub back to proper working order, and what a difference 😀. Friends came over from Wales, it's their favourite pub here, and were really happy to be back when they came to the pub, seeing the difference between now and even the summer. Chips to die for, no idea how they do it but they're the best I've ever had. Service, food, atmosphere, everything is the best. Fruit and veg from a mile away (if that), meat etc all local. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for, and we're happy to pay for properly sourced and cooked food and proper service.
Pre walk meal and the Sunday roasts were delicious. Plentiful meat with the most delightful roast potatoes, and crispy Yorkshire pudding and a huge jug of gravy, Medley of winter veg to accompany all of this with creamy mashed potato. Cask ales and a very nice wine selection topped off the whole experience, well done to all of the staff!
Booked table for Sunday lunch yesterday, 2 adults and my little dog, told staff we would be ordering child’s portion as I have had a stomach operation and can’t eat large portions, told that was ok as we had same the Sunday before. However on ordering at the bar we was told chef would not let us order child’s portion, I then explained about my operation and that I would not be able to eat it, staff went back to chef to explain and said he would do a medium roast for £11, it takes me all my time to eat a small one, my partner was a bit off colour and just wanted soup, as chef refused to accommodate us we left and went to the Pickering Arms where Helen and her team managed to squeeze us in even though they were mad busy, she welcomed us with open arms and will definitely be going back there, soo much cheaper than the Red Lion, we will definitely not be going back there, chef never even came out to explain just sent a message that he doesn’t want to do child’s portions for adults, who do they think they are??
Been to this pub before whilst on visits to the area to see family over a 20 year period. Recently visited late afternoon and tried to have a drink in the pub but informed I wasn’t allowed as it was food only with someone guarding the bar area so I couldn’t order a drink. Was directed to a narrow room attached to the older part of the pub which was crowded with dogs children/prams etc, hardly any access to the bar as groups sat on stools on either side, no where to sit. I then sat back in the main part of the pub (which is the original beamed building where most people would want to sit), unobtrusively in the corner and was then rudely informed that if someone wanted the table I’d have to move (there were about 10 plus tables free at the time). Ironically they spent the whole time delivering food to the modern narrow room (used the old pool table room years ago) where everyone was crammed in. I prefer a normal pub, where you can go to bar order a drink and sit where you want to & not treated like a second class citizen because I haven’t ordered a meal when I’m not hungry.
We are so pleased the pub has been taken over by a new couple which we have no doubt will make a success of it. We went to the Pie and Mash evening and it was lovely all made by their own hands. We wish them every luck in the world. Thank you for a lovely evening. Xx❤
