About us

Far from the hubbub of the main roads, nestled amidst thatched cottages in the pretty village of Chrishall, just South of Cambridge between Saffron Walden and Royston, sits The Red Cow - a picture-perfect thatched pub, ideal for your escape to the country. The Red Cow is owned & managed by Toby Didier 'Serre & his partner Alexis Beeching.

Before making his home on The Red Cow range with Alexis in October 2010, award-winning chef Toby cut his culinary teeth for 5 years as Head Chef at the Goose Fat and Garlic in Sawbridgeworth and then moved on to become Head Chef at the Chequers, Matching Green, Essex where his reputation for immaculately presented, flavoursome dishes enabled the Chequers to cement its place as one of Essex’s most popular gastropubs during his 5 years tenure there.

As a lover of fresh produce and rural sporting activities, Toby relishes his role as The Red Cow’s convivial host and ensures our guests are made to feel as welcome as we can possibly make them.

Beautiful pub with amazing food. The staff were so lovely and we were given all the time we needed to chat and eat.

First time visiting the red cow. Great pub in a beautiful village. Staff were polite and friendly. Food was fantastic. We had the burgers and chips which I would rate a firm 9.2/10. It was juicy, flavourful and just very nice. Chips perfectly cooked. My daughter had nuggets, Chips and peas, all looked homemade and she loved it. Highly recommended and will be returning.

What a wonderful gem of a place to stay! We planned a visit to IWM Duxford and booked an overnight stay at the Red Cow. The rooms are to the highest standard of any of the accommodations I have stayed in (worldwide - I've visited 40+ countries). They exude old-world charm with modern amenities. The inn itself is a beautiful thatched building with a lovely interior that is quintessential English with a wonderful atmosphere that feels comfortable and quaint. The meals were well prepared and presented and reasonably priced. The only reason for the 4 star service rating was due to newly hired staff serving our evening meal. They were being trained and were unsure of what they were doing. No doubt they will eventually achieve the standard that this establishment deserves.

Travelled to the UK from Australia in June / July 2023 As part of our (wife and I) holiday, I wanted to stay in Chrishall as this is where my ancestors lived before they came out to South Australia way back in 1861, so we booked a room for 2 nights at the Red Cow. We drove up to Chrishall from London on a Sunday and arrived at the Red Cow about 3:00 PM to find the pub packed due to the Sunday roast lunch!! We booked in, dropped our suitcases off in our room and went back to the Red Cow and politely asked if we could order the roast ourselves, understanding that it was now 3:30 PM and the kitchen was probably closed. But this was not a problem as the Staff were only too happy for us to have our roast (which were excellent!) We then enjoyed a couple of drinks out in the beer garden on what was a great afternoon weather wise. They don't do dinner on Mondays but had a food van in the car park which served Mexican food which was of good quality. Again we had a few drinks in the beer garden with lots of other people around providing a good atmosphere. We stayed in the Drage room which was spotlessly clean and spacious. Unfortunately, we could only stay for 2 nights due to our timetable but I can say that this is a gem of a little pub & credit must go to the owners and friendly Staff for a welcoming 'vibe'. Would not hesitate to recommend staying here. If you do, make sure you visit Audley House in the small town of Saffron Walden (approx. 15 minutes from Chrishall) which is excellent.

Lovely village pub B&B with the perfect balance of space for the bar and that allocated for dining. Cool artworks. Reasonable value. Prompt service. Food ordered was well prepared. One thing.... please don't interrupt to ask if everything is OK....if it wasn't I would have told you 🙂.
