Legion Scotland (the daily name of the Royal British Legion Scotland) was formed at the end of the First World War. Ex-servicemen returned to a land allegedly ‘fit for heroes to live in’. In reality they faced unemployment, starvation, and widespread misery in a country struggling to rehabilitate four million soldiers, many of whom were suffering from physical injury and trauma.
As a comedian of the time sang “you had to be a hero to live in it at all”.
In Edinburgh on the 18th of June 1921 what is now known as Legion Scotland was formed, with its English equivalent being established a few weeks later.
We continue to provide community and comradeship for ex-service people and their families today.
