I had a first class Christmas dinner. Food was good quality, there was a great choice and the service was excellent. Also reasonably priced. I couldn’t fault anything about it.
I think this place was GREAT! Great staff, right from the beginning, LARGE clean room, great price! There was lively action going on downstairs. I was tired and went to bed :) . The noise from the bar COULD be heard in my room, but it didn't bother me. I would definitely recommend and WILL stay again when I go back to Edinburgh
I enjoyed my stay at Ravelston, so it was an up-and-down experience. The people, especially Ewan and the waiter at breakfast (didn't get his name) were amazing When we first arrived for our first stay (we stayed two weekends in a row with a break in between), we were unable to check in for 75 minutes past the promised check-in time of 2pm. The woman who had told us we had to wait didn't keep us updated, but Ewan took charge and apologized, offered us complimentary drinks for the inconvenience, and then came up with possible fixes as my husband had an event he had to leave for at 3:30pm, and he needed to change for it. Thanks, Ewan. Our second check in was uneventful, but we did check in after 5pm that day. The food and drink at the bar was good, especially the soup and nachos. Wow. The (included) breakfasts were delicious, filling, and had some of the best coffee (very strong) we had while In Scotland. One thing we wished we had been told about before or after making our booking was that the bar was just at the base of the staircase leading to the rooms (our room was #2, just at the top), so the live music on Saturdays from 8-11pm sounded like it was just for us -- like they were sitting next to the bed as we attempted to sleep. The bar door was kept open, as well, so Friday nights were not much quieter. I know there isn't much they can do about loud patrons, but a bit of warning goes a long way. Would I stay again? Well, the location cannot be beat. The bathroom had lots of hot water and hot showers are wonderful (although there are no shelves in the showers to place soap, or shampoo which makes it awkward). So, maybe.
I attended the Christmas Disco party on 9th December 2023. Full marks for the dessert & disco. Food wise as a vegetarian I was really disappointed. They had advertised the menu as catering for vegetarians. For £40 as a vegetarian I got a very small piece of nut roast. Three to four pieces of carrots & parsnips. I had to ask three times to the server to add more veg otherwise I was being given only three pieces of carrots with a parsnip and a sprout. I was annoyed that I had to explain the pitiful look of my plate to the server three times to ask for some vegetables. The roasted potatoes were not vegetarian friendly due to goose fat. Cranberry sauce and gravy both were not suitable for vegetarians. Others got accompaniments with their dinner like pigs in blanket or more veg. But for a vegetarian like me it was not a good experience. Please consider other dietary needs especially for the price you charge. Lastly, I wrote an email to them regarding this which they did not bother to reply. Just says how much they regard vegetarian customers.
I booked afternoon tea for four. It was so tasty loads to eat. Bit disappointed with the cake choices they were all chocolate try bakes. Think it would have been all the more special if there were little cakes or pastries rather than all chocolate. A pot of hot water with the tea would have been great. Putting all that to one side. It was brilliant value for the money. The service was excellent 👌
