About us

Thought to be about 200 years old, earliest records show The Punch Bowl to be the only pub in the village in 1824. The grounds of the building stand on the original Grand National Steeplechase course and provided the meeting place for the 18th Century social club, 'Mock Corporation of Sefton' who claimed their charter was granted by William the Conqueror.

A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

Whether you are planning dinner with friends or Sunday lunch with family, book a table online and enjoy some quality time with those you love the most.

Excellent food as usual! Great menu with lots of different choices. Good value prix fixe in addition to the a la carte menu though drinks are pricey. Sunday lunches are very nice. Food is always nicely presented and flavoursome. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Dogs are welcome. Has its own car park.

Visited 1 week ago with husband and father in law for a brunch, and it was really nice, between the relaxed atmosphere, friendly waiters, decor and even good music being played in the background, we had a wonderful time there and we will go back in the future when we visit Liverpool again! Plenty of parking space right outside the door! Among ourselves we had a yummy and creamy beetroot soup with warm bread and butter, my husband and his father both had steaks and beer, and I had coffee which was surprisingly good, being from Brazil, I am a bit hard to please when it comes to my coffee, but it was a good one!

M wife arranged a surprise family dinner to celebrate my retirement. We were very well looked after by Heather and Ross. They made sure everything went smoothly. The chef did us proud too (all 18 of us). The food was delicious and service excellent. Thank you to my wife for choosing such a fantastic restaurant. Five stars all the way

If the weather cooperates then sitting outside is the better option surrounded by old established trees and a very relaxing atmosphere. There's also outdoor speakers which give a decent sound. Service was great despite a limited menu, which was outside their control. Food was pretty good, but not great. The olives are decent stone in ones, but in a plain oil which with nocerella olives means only a very mild flavour. The Moroccan chicken wrap was similar, a nice amount of chicken which was warm and moist, but only a scrape of hummus to provide the Moroccan element, it needed the chicken itself to be spiced or another element to make it great. I had the Eton mess for desert and they kindly subbed the passion fruit sorbet for vanilla ice cream. That's just my preference that Eton mess is strawberrys only. The bill was £66 for two appetizers 2 mains, 2 deserts 2 cocktails and 2 drinks. Toilets very clean and a super little spot, and not to far from the beaten track.

Not bad place. It used to be a typical pub called the Punchbowl with a typical pub menu. Now it's called EGO. It's a popular place with plenty of free parking in a quaint village setting. Reception on arrival is quick and friendly. Took us to our clean table straight away. Jugs of water appeared. No glasses and we had to goto the bar to get our own drinks. The bar staff are really helpful, chatty and engaging. I ordered the ribeye £26 medium. When the food arrived the steak was well done but really tasty. Can't fault it. The jugs of water are still there. Great place, great food. Just the jugs of water with no glasses and getting our own drinks knocked a star off
