About us

We're excited to have the Physician as one of the newest additions to the Brunning and Price family. The building was once known as the BMI building and used to house the vast 'Sampson Gangee Library for the History of Medicine'. We believe it was commissioned in 1863 when the Calthorpe Estate expanded to accommodate a huge population growth from the turn of the 19th century. The building oozes historical grandeur; it's high ceilings and large sash windows create beautiful rooms of all shapes and sizes which lend themselves perfectly to becoming a beautiful pub.

There is a huge reclaimed wooden bar at the heart of the building, housing 8 local cask ales, with plenty of room for a 50 strong wine list and array of spirits. The bar overlooks a large wooden floored room, perfect to house the hustle and bustle of drinkers in front of the open fire. It's off this area that you will find smaller rooms to squirrel away in if you choose to have more intimacy or you can opt for the light and airy garden room overlooking the flag stone walled terrace garden to the rear of the pub. There are also 2 rooms that can be used for private dining, both comfortably seating 16.

Had a really lovely meal here yesterday after dropping our son back to his Uni accommodation. He referred to it as his "local pub" but it wasn't like the student pub I envisaged! Really beautiful place, huge and spacious, some of the features we're more like a stately home! Food was excellent and generous portions. I had Crispy Beef Salad, husband had Smoked Haddock, daughter had kid's menu burger and son (vegan) had the Basil Gnocchi. Service was great and very speedy, staff were polite and helpful.

The place is cosy, very well decorated and welcoming. There’s a big selection of drinks and the bar staff is very friendly. Last time I went with friends for a Sunday dinner I was not very impressed, neither the lamb shank nor the turkey roast dinners were up to the standard I’m used to at the physician (we didn’t even get Yorkshire puddings!!, the waitress was not overly friendly either.

This was an office outing. The service was great, we didn’t have to wait long to get our order. Freshly prepared food and large portions for the mains. Also, good variety for drinks both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. But, very limited vegetarian/vegan options. Nice ambiance. Although a bit pricy. Overall a great experience.

The Physician is an excellent restaurant that has great service. We were greeted by our hostess/Waitress and brought to our table. The restaurant is inviting with a nice atmosphere. They drink menu is vast with wines, spirits, cocktails and draft beer. Our food was brought out in a timely manner. Pictured is the fish and chips which were fabulous. From all the restaurants I visited in my time in the UK, this place had the best service.
