About us

The Perch is one of Oxford’s oldest pubs. We’re just a few minutes walk from the Isis (Oxford’s stretch of the Thames) and Port Meadow, a historic common stretching from Jericho to Wolvercote.

In the summer, our garden is the envy of the whole city, and our 17th century plaster-rubble building with its traditional thatched roof will charm even the most seasoned pub-goers.

There’s been a pub on our site for at least 800 years. In those 800 years, we’ve been a favourite of some of Britain’s best poets and authors, a frequent haunt of Inspector Morse, and one of the most influential venues in the British Jazz scene.

As of Spring 2015, we’ve conducted a full scale renovation to bring a traditional pub into the modern world, and ensure we’ll be around for the next 800 years.

We provide a refuge for everyone who loves great food and drink – whether they’re thirsty students, hungry walkers, exploring families, muddy dogs, or adventurous visitors.

Absolutely fantastic lunch here with my friends today! Delicious food, lovely atmosphere, with all that somehow only outdone by the service provided to us by Drew! We'll be leaving a Trip Advisor review as well 👍

Beautiful pub, always been my long standing favourite pub for over 10 years. This place just gets better in time. They made amazing use of their gigantic garden, summer time is great with outside bar and easy access to the beautiful port meadow/ river; they also built a beautiful conservatory for dining in. Just having a cosy mulled cider by the fire is always pleasant. The quality and presentation of the food is always high quality and delightful every time we dine here. Can't really fault the place apart from needing to remember to pre book a table. Customer service is very welcoming and friendly too. I look forward to going back again

Had a really good Xmas lunch there with my partner a week before. Good selection for us, I'm a vegetarian and my partner isn't. What a god treat before the big day. It was fully booked and every other tables seem to be having a wonderful meal too. What a way to get into the Christmas spirit! Also, a good walk by the river after is so great too!

I can’t say enough good things about this place. It embodies the idyllic cozy British inn at its best. The menu is a compilation of delicious and homey classic pub food, but elevated and often with a twist (e.g. vegan fall vegetable Wellington rather than beef). I have visited The Perch a handful of times now and every single time we’ve experienced great service, enjoyed every single dish, and overall had a fantastic experience. Vegan options are featured on their own menu and are as good if not better than the non vegan ones. The vegan Wellington, Sunday roast, roast potato side, and chocolate cake have been some of my favorite dishes. I also love the apple cider with rum they offer in Winter. In our latest visit Gwladys was our waitress and she was truly fantastic. The place was full and she was handling a huge group of about 20 people and yet still managed to not only pay attention to us but to provide top notch service. If you try one restaurant while in Oxford, this should be it.

We had our end of year Christmas party here. The staff was amazing and gave us great service. I got there earlier than my teammates, the staff checked our reservations and offered me a seat by the fireplace as I waited for everyone else. Our table was huge, so it was going to be lonely if I sat there alone. I got a pint and killed time next to the fireplace. When a few more people arrived, we moved to our table and ordered drinks, which were served on time. I enjoyed my starter, main and dessert. My starter was a chestnut salad, and I also got to try an absent teammate's duck breast. I loved them. I had turkey as my main, and it was well cooked and seasoned. The dark chocolate fondant dessert sealed the deal for me. After that I had a single espresso and headed home happy. Lovely culinary experience.
