About us

Our historic hotel at the foot of Snowdon is where Hillary and Tenzing trained for the first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953, and where today's visitors can get a real taste of adventure in the beautiful wilderness of Snowdonia National Park.

Tales from the Smoke Room - new book launched at the PyG

When Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay first stood on the top of Mount Everest, only a handful of people knew the debt of gratitude they owed not only to the mountains of North Wales but also to a little hotel in the lee of Snowdon.

It was at the Pen y Gwryd Hotel (or 'PyG') that members of the 1953 Everest Expedition stayed during their training for that historic adventure, and it subsequently became - and remains - a place of pilgrimage for mountaineers the world over.

Luxury is not to be expected from this hotel, but a high level of service and ruf-tuf mountain culture is what you will receive. It oozes mountaineering history and has a level of service straight out of the 50s. You can almost smell Mallory's pipe tobacco. If only there were more hotels like it.

After a long days walking and wanted to visit this place for a well deserved pint on the finish and maybe lunch. It appeared more run down in person then the pictures and looked closed and the only entrance said 'entrance for residents only'. We walked around it and couldn't see another entrance so went in. The lady behind the bar appeared annoyed and was very blunt, short and not engaging at all. We asked about food and they said they only do dinner that you have to pre book and minimum order of 3 courses. We ordered a round of drinks, not a large selection and sat down for a rest. The place is very old with lost of wonderful history and was very interesting. As we sat another group wandered round the building and came back stood at the door pondering entry the same as us. I would sort the signage out, maybe put an open sign outside or benches in the side carpark to make it look more inviting and actually open

If you love the romance of Everest, then this is a Bucket List item. You Do feel you’ve gone back to the 50’s, lots of memorabilia, and the room with Hilary’s signature on the roof am sure looked like it looked 70 years ago.

Where to start? This was one of the most unusual hotels I've ever stayed in. It is like the hotel that time forgot. Nestled at the foot of Snowdon & other mountains, it is in an amazing location, and clearly totally mountaineering-based (photos and memorabilia of Everest ascents etc everwhere). It appears not to have changed for the past 100 years. The rooms are shabby, but homely. The winding corridors are a maze. There are few modern comforts (e.g. no air conditioning), and no keys for the rooms (as 'we haven't needed those for the past 50 years....'). [Bizarrely, the wi-fi in our room was great]. The food was fantastic (a large gong is sounded when it's ready!) and the staff were total characters. So - if you want luxury, a TV, A/C etc, don't go here. But if you want a real experience in the depths of the mountains, I highly recommend it. I'd go back tomorrow.
