Located in the heart of historic York on the south side of Parliament Square Pavement Vaults brings you the finest most flavoursome BBQ and smoked food alongside a top drawer range of craft beer, wine and cocktails.
Like the majority of York, Pavement Vaults and its earlier incarnations, are steeped in history. Originally it was part of Pavement, a medieval street dating back to 1378, but was bisected in order to make way for Piccadilly. Prior to the demolition the site was a coaching inn. The White Swan Hotel was built on the site 1912 and the “Centre Bar,” housed within the hotel, was popular hangout for York’s young hedonists.
The hotel was finally closed in 1982.
Opened in November 2015 beneath the former historic White Swan Hotel a unique drinking and dining experience awaits. York’s first and finest smokehouse will delight your senses. Our open kitchen means you can watch the chefs at work and your nose will get a hint of the rubs and smokey magic. Our chefs were trained by 3 times UK National BBQ Champion Andy Annat.
Pavement Vaults is operated and owned by the Pivovar Group, owners of award winning craft beer bars around the country including Euston Tap, Sheffield Tap, York Tap and Tapped Leeds. Great beer is our pride and you can always be guaranteed a range of cask, keg and bottled beer to please all tastes. The beer range is complemented by an extensive contemporary wine list and features modern classic cocktails selected by General Manager and hospitality veteran Sam Wheatley.
The ‘Vaults’ team of attentive and knowledgeable staff bring you great food, drink and service in the heart of York.

Wow ! Incredible food, sensational experience… some of the best food my wife and I have eaten anywhere in the world. Absolutely belting. Portions were on the large size, but that aside the quality, the cooking, taste and eating was stunning. We’ve not had ribs like this anywhere, ever. If you want quality food of this kind, you will struggle to beat it I think, anywhere, not just in York. If you like ribs and BBQ food, pop this place right at the top of your list, but book ! Simple to book on line…. But avoids disappointment. Staff super attentive, orders were spot on, nice for staff to listen and bring what you’ve asked for. Thank you.
Fantastic burger, for my loyal followers, it might make it to my top 'best burger in York ', sorry Burgsy's! I had the double bacon and cheese. And today was the blue bull, with pulled beef and Yorkshire blue cheese, delicious. Uniquely they also make their own brioche buns!
I had the Naughty Doris and my partner had the fish tacos. Be aware that the fish tacos, as with most things here, are a decent sized portion. The "small plate" label is definitely not applicable here! (Which is a good thing)
Absolutely insane food! Alex the chef personally came to see us. An absolute asset to the business. Tommy the waiter looked after us massively, friendly and attentive and you can tell he enjoyed the job. The best steak and ribs we have ever had! We visit York every year and will be back for sure.
Having been a visitor to York for many years I have had Pavement Vaults recommended to me a number of times but have never been. Today we visited for dinner and drinks and we thoroughly enjoyed the food and service. I was not expecting to find a full BBQ menu with slow smoked meats, and excellent burgers. The BBQ Beast platter featured the most tender St Louis Rib, a generous portion of succulent pulled pork, perfectly crispy chicken wings and delicious breaded buttermilk fried chicken. The accompanying chips, pickles and slaw were a very welcome addition and the two sauces were simple yet sublime. It tasted like the BBQ sauce was made in-house. The burger was juicy, packed full of flavour and topped with crispy bacon and cheese, with a large helping of the pulled pork to top it off. In hindsight, the side order of Macaroni Cheese might have been one dish too many, but we didn’t regret it, and having been craving Mac & Cheese for the past few week, this was simply wonderful. Service was super friendly and attentive and there was a chilled laid back vibe to the bar area.
