Great wines, wine experts and music

I knew The Oxford Union for its famous debates, controversial debates sometimes I must say, but I was not aware of the beauty of the library. If you are lucky, you can sightsee the library during its open hours to visitors. Here is one tip from me, though. On a sunny day, you can hardly see the murals at all. The best time to come is a cloudy day or when it is getting dark outside.

A great place to watch debates, with an excellent library and bar too. Generally you have to be a member, which means being in statu pupillari (i.e. studying at Oxford University, Ruskin, Brookes, and 4 other affiliated Oxford institutions). There are also other forms of membership, although I'd prefer not to disclose these. 🙂 If you want to go to the bar or library, then you can ask a member to allow you in. The photo gallery is well worth checking out: Union committee's past with famous luminaries such as Mother Theresa, Ronald Reagan, Ted Heath, Benazir Bhutto... and that's not including all the pictures in the bar! If it's to go to a debate, then you have to a member. Or a member has to allow you in AND you have to pay £10 AND you should be lucky... Turn up at 7pm? And you may be. 7:40pm? Probably not. (I write this having turned up to a debate on Veganism at 7:30pm... full to capacity and no let-ins due to COVID rules. Capacity is an issue in normal / pre COVID times too). A POINT FOR IMPROVEMENT. Define irony: going to a debate titled "THB Veganism is the only moral choice"... and the bar has no vegan food options! To be fair: there was crisps. 🙄 My suggestion would be Funghi pizza - it sounds refined and yet is cheaper and better than pepperoni. On a broader point: the Union should appoint a decent part-time Chef / become a gastropub. If bar costs are an issue, then there are even decent ready meals - man (or other genders) cannot live on pepperoni pizza alone. 🍕 TLDR: A venue of such distinction is made for Gourmet cuisine, yet offers textbook generic options. As a concluding point: going to the Oxford Union is an immense privilege - evidence for Grace in the universe. However wear it lightly. As is said in Game of Thrones: "'Any man who must say, "I am the King", is no true king." Same for most genders and true here. If invited: accept it as a rare gift and thank them for the privilege... but don't force it or overdo it. Enjoy your time in the sun.

Totally not worth the membership fee. Incredibly entitled staff that doesn't provide good service and that look down on students. The speaker events are not that great and you can find better and more insightful talks on YouTube. It's not an "instution of the University" in any way

Goodman library is great to work in and the rest of the rooms each have their own interesting character. Bar is cosy.
