I am reviewing this as a hotel. I stayed here 4 nights as I explored the prehistoric sights of Orkney (which are excellent). Ivy, the owner, is lovely and gracious and runs a very well organized and professional ship. She has a very kind energy and I found her delightful and respectful. All of the staff, actually are lovely. From the women in the restaurant to the young lady who also works there. Very friendly, helpful and gracious. Orkney is a FANTASTIC destination for history and prehistory and the best way to do it is by renting a car or by getting a private driver. Mine was a wonderful man recommended by Ivy, his name was Gordon and he showed me all I wanted to see and more and just made the whole trip a delight. He charged less than $100 a day which I thought was a good deal in today economy. We saw just about all there is to see on the island! The food at the hotel restaurant is excellent. The included breakfast and the breakfast staff are also great. Hot eggs and sausage and bacon made to order in a lovely dining room. Add to that fresh juices, berries, yogurt, oats, toast! Can’t be beat. The room I had was small and cozy and peaceful except for Friday night until 11:00 pm I could hear too much bar noise below me. But after 11:00 pm it was fine and earlier all the other nights. There is no refrigerator in the room so you pretty much have to eat out. Beds are comfy. Rooms are clean and secure. No frills but does the job. My only complaint was that it was a bit hard to sleep some nights due to the hot weather even in September up on the second floor and the facility was not able to provide any fans. I think considering climate change and guest comfort a small investment in some fans would drastically improve guest comfort. Location is very central to many sights, not too far drive from a Skara Brae and Ring of Brodgar and Birsay, all amazing. Hotel itself is not walkable to much, and not much to see directly around it, but an easy drive to everything. It’s quite a bit closer to some of the main sites than if you stayed in Kirkwall, and perhaps cheaper. If you have a car, this place would likely be king and the most tranquil and probably well run option on the island I imagine. I want to thank Ivy and all the staff again for their warm welcome and for hosting me on their lovely and precious island. I would love to come back someday. Much love to you all!
Went on recommendation and loved it. On this trip we were in search of seafood and we found it - crab salad and hot smoked salmon salad, then monkfish and plaice as main courses. Delicious all the way. Would definitely go back and eat there again
We stayed here as a family group on a recent visit to Orkney, the hotel is welcoming, comfortable and spotlessly clean. The rooms are comfortable with everything you need - the highlight of our stay here was the food - every meal was delicious, amazing ingredients, we would have stayed longer just to try more on the menu 🤣. Look forward to returning again.
Stayed for two nights. Wished we'd have stayed longer. Extremely friendly staff and great service. Twin room was very comfortable and looked newly decorated. Food was exceptional both at breakfast and when we dined in the restaurant. Would stay here again.
Didn't stay in a room but the 4 of us in our party went for a meal there. Absolutely excellent! All of us enjoyed all three courses. The staff were very helpful and can't fault the service at all. Would definitely recommend it.
