About us

Part of the building was originally the stables. The inn's front door is reputedly the second oldest in the area. Note the intriguing old photographs of Tewkesbury. Reports suggest resident ghosts lincluding an old lady and a cavalier). A pleasant terrace patio overlooks the garden and the river Avon (moorings available), where children (under supervision) can feed the ducks and St John's bridge. The lower restaurant was once the stables and was used as a hospital during the War of the Roses.

Having gone past the Black Bear for the best part of ten years and not having had the chance to visit, I was extremely keen to see what the new owners have done to the place. It is a fantastic renovation of a historic building, which makes many nods to its past, whilst embracing the present. An excellent layout and selection of drinks, whilst being both family and dog friendly make this a winner in my books. I look forward to many more visits!

Well they have certainly made a Fantastic job of the black bear. It feels it’s a lot different it has a lot more atmosphere and some really beautiful areas. During the summer, I can see this is going to get really really busy. Do not judge the smoky grill on the prices, you soon change your mind when you have something. We had the cheeseburger with fries and trust me it was beautiful so give it a try as this place will not disappoint .

My first time in Tewkesbury and I was so impressed with this lovely old (yet new? Refurbished) pub. Its historic building is withstanding for over 700 years, ever since 1308 and I was so surprised with the fresh look it gives and the nice vibes. My favourite thing is: dogs allowed! And even more, they have a dog station with biscuits and treats for our pups. Monty had quite a few! The food was finger licking awesome, probably one of the best burgers I’ve ever had in my life (no exaggeration, I swear!) and also the dirty chips were such a delicious dish, that can be eaten on its own and it’s very filling. I am already planning my return there very soon. Highly recommend. By the time we were leaving the venue people kept pouring in and I am guessing it is a very popular place for drinks and dinner.

Used to frequent this place years ago and was disappointed when it closed. A long time was spent renovating it but as it happens it was worth the wait. So of the old flooring is still there and a few other bits like the individual rooms. The whole place looks amazing with a huge bar and bifold doors onto a patio leading to steps into the garden next to a river. A little bit of tranquility some days and I'm sure in time to come a little bit of hussle n bustle when popularity returns. Wye Valley ale was a winner for me and the staff were keen to take advice for choices made by the customers. Although it was their first week of being open there wasn't much in the way of food on offer but after speaking with staff I was assured change would come. Over all a good feeling for me but for those who's not visited I suggest you do just to see old and traditional mixed with modern up to date. I will be back

Just reopened after a large & very impressive 6 year renovation, very nicely designed . The old rooms at the front are immaculate & have retained their character including the Medieval ceiling in the ' Billiards room ' .As you walk towards the back you're enticed out into the beer garden by the open plan rear of the pub . Very friendly service & some good Wye Valley beers on tap ( £4 a pint ) Free wifi . Haven't tried any food there yet . The oldest pub in Gloucestershire is still one of the best 👌🏻
