This immensely stylish dining pub – with its ‘country house in the city’ feel – is owned and run by classically trained chef David Cambridge and partner Annie Smith, aka the 'most welcoming' Front of House Manager.
Outstanding pub food and à la carte fine dining menus are available – or you can simply savour the wide selection of real ale, fine wines and spirits. Eat in The Dispensary’s welcoming bar or book a table in one of the three private dining areas within our historic grade two listed building, now exquisitely restored and redecorated in the English Heritage style.
The Dispensary was aquired in September 2006 by Annie Smith and David Cambridge and, since then, they have built its reputation as a destination dining pub for those who work in the City and those who visit from beyond. The landmark site in Leman Street, close to Aldgate East, was once the Eastern Dispensary Hospital, erected in 1859 to provide health care for the poorest Eastenders. In 2013-14, David and Annie embarked on an ambitious refurbishment project, commissioning the award-winning designer Jackie McWeeney to transform the period interiors of this grand Italianate building, with so many original features.
Came upon this really nice pub while staying in Camberwell. Really great atmosphere and lighting with Irish style pub decor. Really decent pint of Guinness and an excellent range of whiskeys. The barman was friendly and provided excellent service. I highly recommend paying a visit to the Old Dispensary.
The aparent owner made us feel uncomfortable touching our hats and trying to flirt with us and then kicked off when we didnt want to follow him inside, he explained it was because the smoking area was closing but that was only after he man handled my friend. We just thought he was some random drunk guy trying to take us with him and then he kicked us out. Wont recommend owner was giving weird vibes
Love this place. Went recently on a live music night and it was great. A lot of beers were off but they had a one going that was not a generic lager, so all good. Highly recommend on music nights
Lovely old pub nice warm relaxing space to come and catch up with a pint great selection of beers and snacks There was some music yesterday which was really nice as well and the pub is open quite late
Proper pub that's authentic and hasn't been hit by the modernisation stick. Regulars know each other and the atmosphere's comfortable and convivial.
