The Old Crown is located in the picturesque Cumbrian village of Hesket Newmarket, on the northern edge of the Lake District National Park. The pub is owned by a co-operative of some 150 customers and supporters from the local and wider community.
It is England’s first registered co-operatively owned pub.
Located in the picturesque Lake District village of Hesket Newmarket. Thriving, cosy traditional pub offering a warm welcome, excellent beer and good food. The Old Crown became Britain's first co-operatively owned pub in 2003. The co-operative is dedicated to maintaining the essential character of the pub. The Old Crown serves the very best real ales brewed by the Hesket Newmarket Brewery which stands in a barn at the rear of the pub. Always at least six Hesket Newmarket beers are available.
The beer at this stone-built pub in a beautiful fellside village doesn’t have to travel far – it’s made next door. Community ownership of Hesket Newmarket Brewery came first, in 1999, and it was only several years later that the villagers (including long-time regular Chris Bonington) clubbed together to buy the pub. There’s a real fire, black-and-white prints on the wall and mugs and jugs hanging from wooden beams. This is ale territory, with not a creme brûlée porter in sight, though American hops make an appearance in the Brim Fell IPA.

A lovely local pub with a great home feel atmosphere. The food was excellent, and I would fully recommend this place again.
Had a fabulous evening meal here while camping up the road. The steak and ale pie was delicious, I’d thoroughly recommend this place to anyone, and only wish it was open at lunchtime during the week, and we would have made a second visit.
What a find!!! Stumbled across this place after walking Carrock fell The draft is spot on and the food is the best meal I have had in the lakes! EVER! The locals are also great banter and very welcoming!!!
Great pub run by the locals . Beers served are from the Hesket Newmarket Brewery located next to the pub. A nice unspoilt inn within a lovely fellside village. Check the opening times as they have been closed over lunch when I have passed by over the last few years.
Oh boy, what a great Pub that we found by coincidence. Nicely decorated and very kind service 🥰. The food was really good and also the crumble was very Yummi 🤤 always nice to be surprised by something that special when you don’t expect it. Also did we meet great folks there and had a chat. As this was our last evening in the UK 🇬🇧 it made our last night very special to us
