About us

Created out of a former antiques shop front, The Old Cross Tavern opened in May 1999 with a desire to maintain the classic traditions of British pubs both in atmosphere and serving real ales in top condition.

Our slogan is: “Pubs the Way They Used to Be”. There is no piped music, TV or gaming machines - just great ale and good conversation. And, the heartbeat of the Tavern is our customers and locals making it a friendly, stimulating and welcoming place to socialise and relax.

The Tavern is a multiple winner of CAMRA awards and a regular entrant in the Good Beer Guide since 2000.

Went to Hertford Castle Christmas market and had a mulled wine sat on a park bench, then on way back decided to pop in here for a lovely pint of landlord, sitting on the park bench was warmer than in here despite a barely going open fire, we both sat in here with our coats on and saw someone else put there’s back on, not quite how pubs used to be 🥶

One of the best real ale pubs in Hertford. Reasonable prices, great atmosphere, no food. Thoroughly recommended.

A nice little real ale pub. Nice atmosphere and comfy seating. A nice range of ales served "southern" style, i.e., no sparkler, which, unfortunately, made the beer flat instantly. The young fella pulling the pints had zero communication skills other than the odd grunt, but pulled a flat pint perfectly. I would recommend this pub unless you fancy a bit of "head". (On your pint, of course).
