The only THATCHED pub in Northumberland. We have recently re-opened after refurbishment to make our pub a warm, welcoming venue for locals and visitors.

The Black Bull, the only thatched pub in Northumberland, we have recently been going through refurbishment of the pub and building new relationships with local suppliers. Our vision is to tightly integrate with local producers and create a hub for the community of the Ford and Etal Estate. Our new Chef, Stefano, has created an amazing, traditional menu with Sardinian twist, using sourced, local ingredients.

We focus on local products, so when coming to the Pub you experience what the whole Estate has to offer:

Our bread is made from flour from Heatherslaw Cornmill

Sitting on the banks of the River Till, Heatherslaw Mill is the only place in Northumberland where you can experience the sight, sound and smell of a traditional mill. You can learn how to operate the hoist, grind your own flour, try your hand at bread-making then take home some freshly milled flour to make your own wonderful creations at home.

There is a history of over 700 years of milling on this site. Powered by a 16 foot water wheel the fully-restored mill machinery, including three different pairs of millstones, still makes high quality, stoneground, wholemeal flour from wheat grown in the local fields. This is the flour we use to create our menu at the Black Bull.

Our beer comes from an Estate's Cheviot Brewery

Cheviot Brewery is a new micro-brewery situated on the Ford & Etal Estate producing exciting new real ales from North Northumberland.
Like all good ideas, the idea to set up a brewery happened over a throw away remark over a beer, or maybe a few beers, in a Barcelona brewery tap in 2015. Whilst such ideas usually stay in the pub, Pete, Jonathan and Neil turned that remark into a serious conversation and a lot of research. Three years and two months later with ale in our fermenters and cask orders in place, this dream became a reality, thanks not only to a real desire to make great beer that we want to drink but with help and support from all over, not least from the Ford & Etal estate whom have renovated a derelict property on the estate to become Cheviot Brewery.

Our goat's cheese comes from Blue House Goats in Lowick

Blue House Goats are the artisan cheese makers based in Lowick. They are an enclosed herd, where they keep Anglo Nubian goats. The milk for making cheese is never bought in and always comes from the goats on the farm. Through careful breeding of Goats, the cheese has a truly lovely, smell-free taste of mild lemons.

Our sausages are sourced from a local farmer
