About us

Great AA Rosette award winning food, with large helpings and side orders for the extra hungry. Smaller dishes for the waist watchers. Creamy mash, properly chunky chips, steaks seared to succulent perfection.

Many locations to enjoy our food. The restaurant for a sit-down meal or booths for friends and families. Intimate tables for the romantics. A cosy cellar bar with original vaulted ceilings for more of a pub-grub experience.

Two totally unique bars for a social drink or nightcap. And an outdoor terrace for eating and drinking and for that warm sun on your face smile.

Having visited York many times, we finally found the time to visit the Judge’s Lodging. Upon entering the cellar for afternoon coffee and tea, the listed building is undoubtedly spectacular. We were seated in very comfortable surroundings indeed, the volted ceilings very impressive. The disappointing parts, unfortunately, the tea being served with a coffee spoon, the scones being served with the wrong type of knife, having to ask for sugar, having to ask for milk for the tea and being served whipped cream with the scones rather than clotted cream that one would really expect in such an establishment. The scones however were fresh and warm, the coffee and tea delicious. Having looked forward for many years to visiting, we were left feeling let down, perhaps we’ll visit again for a hopefully improved experience…

We stayed here so that we could enjoy the Christmas markets. The location was great and right in the middle of everything, however, not sure I would recommend this hotel if you have a car. The walkway that cuts to the hotel from the car park is closed after dark and we had to walk around the park, which was about half a mile with luggage in tow since there is no way to drop off luggage. The hotel seemed very understaffed - servers were working the front desk, there was no one to help with luggage, and we had to bring our luggage through a very crowded pub to get to our room. I would not recommend a terrace room when the weather is nice. Even with it being cold out we could hear a ton of people outside of the pub as the terrace rooms are directly across and there are tables basically right outside your room for people to sit at. There is also a roof top bar above these rooms which was closed in the winter, but would likely be loud in the summer. The restaurant was alright, we did festive dining and afternoon tea. Not really much choice for teas, this was obviously just a thing they were doing for the holiday. Would recommend Betty’s instead. I appreciated the breakfast being close by, which allowed us to bring toast and yoghurt back to our room. They also offer you milk for your tea and put it in a mini refrigerator. There is also free water that is replenished during your stay. Overall I’d recommend this hotel based on location, but would recommend a different room than terrace if you aren’t going in the winter.

Conveniently located in the city centre with lovely, friendly and attentive staff! We stayed for one night and enjoyed a delicious full breakfast which really saved this from being a slightly negative review. - Honestly, our breakfast was fantastic and everything you want from a full cooked offering to get the day started. The staff we dealt with were professional, friendly and extremely attentive. The only gripe we had was with the overall cleanliness of our room. There was an inexcusable amount of cobwebs, a few hairs on the bed and depressingly a lot of mould in the en-suite…. all things that some better housekeeping would be able to get under control! Anyway, the staff, location and breakfast more than made up for this, and when I brought these matters to the attention of our lovely receptionist at the end of our visit, she took my constructive criticism onboard with empathy! Bravo, and well done - it’s so refreshing when businesses actually listen to their customers in such a positive manner and the lady on reception handled it so well👏🏻

The Judge's Lodging was a really great place to stay, highly recommended! The room we stayed in was separate from the main building which was very handy for access at all hours. The room was very comfortable and a good size, with a sofa and a coffee machine (with a good range of flavour capsules to choose from) alongside the usual choices of tea bags. The bathroom was huge with a very spacious shower - all set up so it could also be used as a wet room for those with mobility issues. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and nothing was too much trouble for them to help with. We didn't try the main restaurant but the Cellar Bar was great for drinks and food, and reasonably priced.

We stayed in room 11 Clinton - right at the end, felt lovely and private and it's a massive room, with a seating area and big bathroom with a shower and separate jacuzzi bath. Lovely and clean, queen size bed was lovely and fab amenities like a fan, iron etc and nice fluffy towels. The white company soaps are a lovely touch. Shower base is a bit wobbly in the middle for some reason! Reception staff lovely. Amazing location literally bang in the centre close to everything - can't find a better location honestly. Lovely bar and restaurant for drinks. Breakfast is nice, service for breakfast was OK, but you kind of feel a bit forgotten about - no one checks in if you need anything once you have your food ; no coffee or juice refills etc. You have to go find someone. All in all, still a fab stay would come again
