A traditional Real Ale House with an intimate atmosphere for live music and contemporary décor, favouring the 'unplugged' feel that comes from close contact between artists and members of the public.
The unique concept began in late 2008 as an amalgamation between Jamie Lawson, director of Ossett Brewery, Mike Heaton drummer from Yorkshire Indie band Embrace and ex-Virgin Japan MD Mike Inman.
With over 13 years brewing experience and over 35 years knowledge of the music industry, The Hop concept was born
At the heart of The Hop is Real Ale, a unique, traditional product and Britain's National Drink.
Whereas most beer is pasteurised and/or filtered for longer shelf life, Real/Cask Ale/Beer is fresh beer with live yeast in the cask. Its undergone a slow, secondary fermentation that keeps it in peak condition. Ensuring depth of flavour and a natural carbonation (Pete Brown 2010).

Great atmosphere, great selection of beers, live music, great crowd, you need to experience the Hop in York. I didn't eat so can't rate the food, but know they cook their own pizzas which looked very nice
Just had a lazy Sunday afternoon in the rear bar. Super range of drinks and super looking main course food. We only sampled fancy snacks but all were very good.
Great selection of drinks (especially craft beers!), pizzas were amazing and atmosphere was great. Bar staff weren't quite as "on it" as they could be (drinking wine at the end of the bar) but nevertheless it was fun! Would definitely recommend.
Found this place by accident while walking through York. Seems like a nice place to sit and drink but we were mainly here for the pizzas which were incredible. Lunchtime deal is excellent value for money and very filling. The pizzas are freshly made and fired and they use good quality ingredients on them. Really pleased to have stumbled across this place.
It's spacious, quiet and has a good beer selection. That's about it. The pizza is woeful, there are better offerings in town, but even by pub pizza standards it's got to be up there with some of the worst I've had. Cheese heavy, undercooked, and lacked any flavour. Beer is fine, got a lot of Salt and Osset Brewery stuff, but one of our glasses was dirty and after getting a new one, the barman just poured the drink from the dirty glass into the clean one - it's the equivalent of picking food up that fell on the floor and putting it on a clean plate. I'd come for a pint if I just wanted somewhere to have something hazy and fizzy, but again, plenty better options on this buzzing street.
