About us

Our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

Whether you are planning dinner with friends or Sunday lunch with family, book a table online and enjoy some quality time with those you love the most.

Steeped in as much history as the nearby city of York, our name The Fox and Roman reflects the building's former use as The Fox Hotel and also to a Roman grave found on the site in 1833, we even have a few artefacts on display. The Fox Hotel used to stable racehorses and we still welcome friendly crowds of race goers on race days at the nearby York Racecourse.

The service was great as was the food. However, the food could have been warmer. The soup for example had been put into a cold bowl so was lukewarm by the time it reached the table and the same happened with the fries with the main dish. There were a couple of menu options not available at 5.30pm on a Saturday evening which was unexpected and they were unfortunately items we would have ordered. Upon ordering we were informed there was a half hour wait for food. The drinks are a bit on the pricey side but I guess that's the norm nowadays. The staff were all very pleasant and made us feel welcome and it's a pleasant place to enjoy a meal and we would visit again.

Had a day around York taking the Father in-law to the National Railway Museum and other things. So thought it would be good to get a bite to eat after all the walking. Seen the Fox and Roman numerous times driving in and out of York and its always looked welcoming. So as it ideal for the South of York nipped in for a drink and a bite to eat. (Monday 2pm ish) the place has be decorated for Christmas but in a good not over the top way!..... open fire was going, ideal for a windy autumn day and the place is large but cosy at the same time! The staff are welcoming, friendly and helpful and the atmosphere, although not busy was pleasant for this time of day. Great food, all of us really enjoyed it and would consider visiting again. Ideal for the race course and welcomes dogs so again another bonus. Enjoyed our visit.

Lovely afternoon with a couple of friends, my daughter & my newborn grandbabies. We had a big table with plenty of room, the staff were very attentive & patient. We were not rushed & we received a bottle of prosecco on the house for my birthday. The food was delicious, decent portions, hot & reasonably priced. We all has a lovely time and based on this experience, would highly recommend.

Sunday Lunch: Food looked good but didn't live up to the visual promise. Menu stated broccoli, and as such I thought the extra of cauliflower cheese would be a tasty addition. However Broccoli was replaced by cauliflower so I ended up with stacks of it...for £3.50 extra. Roasties were hard. Sophie was worth the 4 stars.

Visited with family. The interior gives a homely comfy vibe. The lady who served us was lovely, really welcoming and friendly. She offered to take our photo too. She really made a difference. The food was ok, the usual pub grub. I would return, as it's handy when visiting family.
