About us

Nestled on the tranquil north side of Scarborough, The North Riding Hotel stands as a testament to tradition and the vibrant culture of brewing. Originally constructed in the 1850s, our establishment proudly upholds the spirit of a classic public house. We’re situated just a two-minute stroll from North Bay Beach, the Open Air Theatre, Peasholm Park, the Coastliner Bus Stop, and a leisurely ten-minute walk from the heart of the town centre.

In our public bar, you’ll discover an inviting atmosphere adorned with a pool table, television, and a harmonious backdrop of music. It’s the ideal spot for those who relish lively company and a bit of entertainment.

Our lounge bar exudes an entirely different charm. Here, the emphasis is firmly on conversation, making it a perfect haven for engaging with friends, old and new. When winter chills set in, an open fire creates a cosy ambiance. You’ll also find our much-anticipated Quiz Nights every Thursday evening at 8:30 pm, hosted by the Landlady’s husband and regular patrons on a rotational basis. Flex your brainpower, or simply indulge in some good-natured banter; the choice is yours!

The heart and soul of our establishment lies in the quality of ales we serve. We proudly feature a selection of six handpumps, six keg lines, as well as an array of seven ciders and one perry. Every sip is an invitation to savour the craft and dedication that goes into each brew. For those with a penchant for exquisite spirits, we offer a selection of locally sourced Gins from Hooting Owl and Rums from Rum Runner. Our commitment to quality extends beyond just our ales, ensuring that every patron enjoys an exceptional experience in our brew pub.

Splendid brewery tap in the north bay close to the cricket ground. Great prices, super tasty ales and a wonderful lady behind the bar. The Cascade, Styrian Wolf and US IPA were all bursting with hoppy goodness. The Gose was tart and spicy and the Strawberry Cheesecake Stout was so good I had seconds. Absolutely worth the short walk from the town centre. If you visit one pub in Scarborough make sure it's the North Riding Brew Pub

My husband loves to call in at this pub when visiting Scarborough. I like the pub, but I don't enjoy going there. I am always thirsty after a day's sightseeing, but I feel ripped off by the price of soft drinks. I'm the designated driver. I enjoy taking my husband to pubs so he can sample the beers but for a soft drink for me it cost nearly as much as his pint for 250ml of coke. It's not on really.

Visited Saturday 8th April 2023, early/mid afternoon. Absolutely superb, reminds me of our local (Alexander Hotel, Derby) and came highly recommended. Traditional wet led pub with a superb selection of cask beers by North Riding, North Riding Brewpub and a couple of guest, alongside modern craft keg with NEIPA's, sours etc. Easy going, non pretentious decor, great staff and customers immediately put you at ease. Prices are cheap to be honest, £6 for a pint of 7.2% Kernel IPA, £4 for a pint of 5.9% Thornbridge Jaipur, £3.50 for a pint of 4.3% North Riding HBC 522 U.S IPA. Could have happily spent a significant amount of time in there, can't recommend it enough.

When, just after Covid had eased, my father-in-law told us of a "decent pub" in Scarborough where, even though he'd been insulted by the landlady about how he'd entered the place not observing their strict post-lockdown rules, you could get craft ales that were well kept and priced like it was the 70s my interest was piqued. This was, mind, now over a year ago so when I found myself in the vicinity I decided to go on the hunt. Not difficult to find (camra rarely gush but when a local wins pub of the town/city at least 10 ten times it's not the usual hyperbole) it's a 20 second stride from the cricket club which I guess would mean it's a place that makes a fair living off the sport but to be fair when I entered (last week of October well past peak cricket) there was still a nice buzz about the place with several obvious locals sampling the waters so to speak. A closer ear detected some conversation about the ales (overhearing discussion about where to drink in York I threw in The Phoenix as a starter for 10) as well as the usual daily wind-down from work. Though mostly male clientèle the atmosphere was welcoming and I didn't feel any undue attention raised to my increasingly soft southern tones. It's worth saying now, even if I hadn't been made to feel welcome, the price of this really superbly brewed and kept beer compared to Bristol's made me think very hard about the move back North. Downsides are hard to find (though I could have lived without the landlord's cough that sounded either like he needed to give up his 40 a day habit or else Covid never actually left his premises) and even though microbreweries abound down South this establishment wears a spiky NE crown as king of its kind here in God's own. It might be on the "wrong" (quieter?) side of Scarborough so not worth the trot across town if you're here for just a couple of days on the spa side but remember these places aren't catering for the masses - but you make the choice - lager lout or cask ale tout?

What an incredible pub! The beer selection was off the charts and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming! I'll definitely be back for another evening soon!
