About us

The Old Ram is conveniently located just off the A140, surrounded by the beautiful Norfolk countryside. The Inn is a mile from the village of Tivetshall St Mary and a 30-minute drive from the vibrant City of Norwich. The historic market town of Diss is 14 minutes’ drive away and Ipswich is 40 minutes’ drive from the property, while for walkers the Inn is a major stop for those walking the historic Boudicca Way.

Tivetshall St. Mary and the local area has a strong historical heritage and it is believed that the village was once the site of a Roman Villa. It is one of the villages located on the ‘Boudicca Way’ a long distance footpath named after a legendary Iceni warrior queen, where walkers can enjoy 36 miles of beautiful scenery passing through picturesque villages and market towns between Diss and Norwich.

The Old Ram is a great base from which to explore the Waveney Valley – famous for its 6 acre Mere, surrounded by trees and large grass areas, and perfect for summer picnics.

There are lots of things to do nearby, including a golf course, fishing, cycling and walking routes. Family attractions to visit include the world-renowned Bressingham Steam & Gardens with a comprehensive collection of steam engines and artefacts, or the popular family attraction Banham Zoo.

A mixture of old and not so old parts of the building with nice period features. Plenty of parking but beside the main road. Ask for a room away from the road. Bedrooms are fine though some low ceiling features where the roof restricts space. Bar and restaurant are nice and appears popular. Decent breakfast.

Only stopped off for morning coffee but were so impressed with the property and especially the lovely lady who served us and others. A chilly day, but she made sure to seat people where they would feel warm and comfortable. We are passing again next weekend to pick up our new puppy and considering staying in one of their rooms the night before. Did I mention it's also dog friendly 😊.

We came here to meet up with family and friends for lunch on New Year's eve. The service was good and friendly staff. The pub is clean and maintained to a high standard. The food is good. I had a green vegetarian curry and the vegetables were all fresh and well cooked. The green sauce was house made which was a nice surprise. The sweets were delicious.

EDIT in response to your reply, the lady herself informed us we arrived at 12.45! We left at 1.35. We will vote with our feet. As I said we were told it was a 40 minute wait for food not a 40 minute before you even took an order. If you had said at the start that you couldn't take walk ins we would have left. My husband went in today at lunch time to ask about food. He was told there was a 40 minute wait for food. He ordered us drinks. I followed in. After 20 mins we asked to order but we were told we needed to wait still before we could order. After 40 minutes waiting we still couldn't order. We paid for 2 drinks that we would not have had if they'd been honest to start with. People on every table waiting for food. If you have a problem tell people, we would have left. No empathy. The lady who appeared to be in charge couldn't care less! No discount on our drinks either, no apology. Awful customer care .

Travelling in England for business, room and welcome was lovely and warm. Met up with 2 friends in the Old Ram for dinner and it was excellent. All but one staff were excellent, however on our leaving the next morning the staff member who provided our breakfast and would be checking us out of the hotel was rude. I opened the exit door to let a staff member into the hotel and my husband from inside the hotel used his key fob to open the boot of his car as I would be putting my small case in the boot while my husband settled our bill. This staff member raised her voice to both my husband and I and walked very quickly to the both of us and stated " you have the bill still to pay!!". The accusation and intonation was that my husband and I were attempting to leave without payment ( we are both in our late 50s) I addressed her by letting her understand that I was placing a case into the car whilst my husband paid the bill ( he was still in the hotel with his small case sitting near the reception area). This is a normal procedure and one I am sure many people do. I found her attitude rude and uncalled for. she later apologised to my husband about her outburst which I have to say would have been heard by other guests having their breakfast...very embarrassing for both of us. Considering an email to the hotel with this complaint. I am aware that people do leave without paying their bill and that's awful for any business and I was just really surprised at why she thought that's what we doing. I have my own theories on this but after many hours of travelling and thinking I will put it down to her having a bad day.
