About us

In March 2019, Steven Bird took over management of The Swan from Alexander Ponting, the owner for the previous 21 years. Steven is a long-term South Wootton resident, and previous Swan employee who aims to continue the long tradition of the family pub, offering a wide choice of ales and spirits and some great food.

There are 3 real ales on at all times – and a good selection of gins, including the local, artisan, hand-distilled ‘What a Hoot’. A varied menu is also on offer, with delicious locally produced, freshly prepared meals available in the restaurant at very competitive prices.

There is ample parking at The Swan, front and back – and with BT Sport on the TV, it’s the ideal place for a night out if you want to enjoy a pint or two in comfort while you watch major sporting events like the Champions League, The Masters, and Wimbledon.

Steven says, ‘We are a friendly local pub that welcomes everyone – whether you’re a local, on holiday, or just passing through. We are the heart of the local community.’

The History of The Swan Inn

The Swan Inn South Wootton is a pub with a lot of history. Opened way back in 1836, the licensee was a Mr John Woodhouse. He kept the pub until 1845 when it was taken over by the Stapleton family who farmed 35 acres locally. The Swan stayed in their hands until June 1912 when it was bought for £800 by Captain R. L. Bagge of Kings Lynn’s ‘Bagges Brewery’ – perhaps trying to grab himself a pre-war bargain.

Bagges had been operating in Kings Lynn since the late 1600’s, but in 1929 they were bought out by the largest brewers in Norwich, ‘Steward & Patterson’, and The Swan was part of the deal along with 73 other Public Houses. By 1964 S&P controlled 1200 pubs, and in 1967 they were bought by Watney Mann for the sum of £7,666,270.

Stopped here tonight for something to eat. Very disappointed. I ordered Cumberland Sausage mixed veg and Chips. Please see photos. What sort of Chef sends out a meal like this. A badly burned Cumberland Sausage sat on the mixed veg ? Almost raw broccoli in a dish full of very watery gravy covered in onions. With a cup full of Chips. The Cook has been watching too much MasterChef. It was £16 & Rubbish...

Lovely pub. Was there on a cold day so didn't get to enjoy their large outdoor space but could tell it's a great spot in the summer

The Swan is a wonderful pub / restaurant. We came here after visiting the Sandringham Estate and found the entire trip to be delightful. The food was excellent and the service was top-notch. We highly recommend stopping by if you visit King's Lynn.
