About us

The fresh and contemporary country-style interior was created by interior designer Jenny Lindop, giving a nod to the pub’s nautical heritage, while well-chosen hand-picked soft furnishings add to the feeling of warmth. The design and build was completed to an incredibly high standard by local company Stuart Farrow Builders.

We welcome four-legged friends in our relaxed bar area, but not in our restaurant unfortunately. Both rooms serve the same delicious menu, but bookings may only be taken for the restaurant.

Excellent place to stay. Very helpful staff. Lovely pub with good food (awesome breakfast!). Our dog was made very welcome. Highly recommended.

Met up with family to celebrate a birthday. It was our first time visiting but will certainly return. There were 7 adults and a toddler. The menu was predominantly Sunday roasts but other options were available. It included a vegan roast and there was a separate children's menu. The roast was delicious with huge portions and so there was no room for desert. Our waiter was amazing and thoughtful, checking all was okay and understanding that a toddler had completely different ideas about what and when to eat. The pub was cosy and warm although we were near the door so had to close it as people leaving had forgotten. The bar seemed to have a good range of drinks as well as tea and coffee. There was a small zero alcohol range but plenty of soft drinks. Most people appeared to be rosy cheeked dog walkers enjoying good food after a cold walk. We would definitely return, with great walks near by and a welcome and warm reception with good food, how can we not. Our only issue, as others have said, was parking. We managed to park towards the harbour, being aware of high tide we parked on the higher side. I would recommend to anyone.

What a find!...on holiday in the area we were looking for somewhere for lunch and how lucky we were to find The Hero named after Admiral Nelson who was born nearby. A truly traditional pub with a lively atmosphere, good food, excellent beer and welcoming service. Mid range pricing but great value for money. Highly recommend a visit.

We popped in for something to eat on our way home. The restaurant was really busy but they found us a table, and I am very pleased they did. It looks and feels like a traditional old boozer, and in many respects it is. The atmosphere is super friendly and casual. The tables are not fussy and there’s a very efficient wood-burner at one end. A better look at the menu though and you’ll find that the Hero elevates itself was above the average pub. There are all the things you’d expect - burger, fish and chips etc - but I ordered the guinea fowl and it was amazing. The service was excellent. Friendly, knowledgeable and efficient, but above all of that… very thoughtful. Our server (Ruby) could see that we were getting a bit too warm in our seats by the fire and as soon as a couple had paid up and left, she offered to move us. We hadn’t complained but really appreciated the fact that Ruby was looking out for her clients.

Had a comfortable stay here. Food is excellent and staff are very attentive. The whole venue is beautifully decorated. The rooms are nice and have all you would need. Any issues we had was sorted quickly. I think the rooms could do with a deep clean from time to time. Bed was very comfortable, we stayed on ground floor undisturbed, hope to stay here again some time.
