The food my friends and I ordered was great but that’s the extent of the greatness…the overall hospitality service was really poor. • The tables were sticky • They didn’t have what we originally ordered so the staff had to come back and forth to tell us what was available to order and what wasn’t, it would’ve been better if staff communicated with the kitchen ahead of time and notified us when we were ordering to reduce disappointment. • When we tried to call over someone there was hardly any staff around to assist us • When the food arrived they forgot cutlery • We asked for water and then only asking for a second time it came out long after our alcoholic drinks. Then we ordered two more drinks that never arrived…by the time we managed to try and flag a staff member down to tell them I had finished my meal and didn’t want a drink anymore so just asked for the bill • When we waited for the bill for 10 minutes they didn’t come back and I think forgot about us so we went up to pay and then were a bit clueless about our second drink and I had to make sure that we took it off the bill so we were not charged for something that never came! • Honestly I had high hopes for this place but the service was really disappointing. If they are short staffed then it would’ve been appreciated to been told prior and there would’ve been a level of understanding. As I said food was really yummy, but wouldn’t go back when there are so many other pubs that do pies in Edinburgh…I can see I’m not the only one that feels this way, should of read the reviews before coming.

Arrived about 12.15 for lunch before a trip to the theatre. Booking a table online about a week in advance was an easy process but I think necessary before the theatre as a lot of establishments in the area get quite busy. I like this kind of eating place as there is an extensive menu with something for everyone. During the booking process you can pick the length of time you want to stay so it is not at all rushed. We all enjoyed our drinks main course and dessert and all in all the whole experience. Will definitely use the Conan Doyle again.

We popped in late in the evening having been on a visit to the city and had a disastrous meal elsewhere and we were still hungry! The guys behind the bar were great and even though the kitchen was about to shut, they made sure we got some food. They are well known for their pies and with good reason. The steak and ale was excellent and served with carrots and the creamiest mash ever. It has a good atmosphere and there was a nice buzz about the place. Drinks were good with a large selection of ales, wine and whiskey. Worth a visit if you like; pies, good value drinks and a slightly old world stylishness.

The name won't leave you much detective work as to what to expect here! It is very much themed on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle the author of Sherlock Holmes. Entry is at street level but the bar and most of the seating is up from there. It's decor is traditional with bar and furniture made of dark wood and has a fireplace. There are also some books available should you be on your own and have some time to browse. There is a good selection of craft beers and gastropub food. I didn't have any food but from what I saw it looked good.

Very old 18th centurian pub that gives the perfect Conan Doyle vibe (as the name suggests). Really well maintained. Great Scottish food. Not very pocket friendly 🙃. Great service ✨. Very friendly staff. A little waiting time doesn't cause much harm. 😋 I went there on a Sunday afternoon, but no reservation needed. P.S. As a non drinker, I think I will recommend this restaurant anyway just for the vibe, and authentic scottish food. May not be your regular go to place for meal but occasional rich scott food date will not make your pockets cry (hopefully 😅).
