About us

The Denbigh Castle is the second pub recently launched by the Small Hands Company, an independent business formed by business and real life partners Fiona and Dominic Hornsby.

We are nestled in one of those quirky streets, Hackins Hey off Dale Street one end and Tithebarn Street at the other. The street has an equally quirky history that we will share with you over a pint when you next pop by. We admit to liking a bit of quirk - take a look for instance at some of the artefacts and pictures adorning the pub. That will reveal a thing or two.

Fiona and Dom, have served their time in the city centre and love this part of town as well as Liverpool 1 where sister pub The Bridewell resides. Slowly, shopping nearby and the business district’s activity are re-emerging, The Denbigh Castle (the original pub name over 200 years ago) re-emerges with them. The same quality products and great service now match that of The Bridewell following the launch in the summer. Whilst we do not serve food, we feature sport and utilises the downstairs bar for functions and events. There is a mix of German lagers, cask & craft beers and an extensive spirit range alongside a vegan wine list and of course the warmest of welcomes.

The Denbigh Castle dates back to at least 1815, William Williams was listed in the Gores directory as the Victualler and we are the oldest pub in the area - we have a large map on the wall for you to look at. A much smaller pub at this time, as was traditional for a beer house - our fire door was the entrance to an alleyway leading to the warehouse at the rear.

Hackins Hey, is one of the oldest streets in Liverpool, named after John Hacking through whose croft, enclosed by hedgerows, the road was laid out in the 1600’s.

in 1852 the pub was extended out to create a two room pub, our facade remained and you can still see the original steps of the old front door and it traded until the 1970’s when its name was changed to Walters, here beer was dispensed petrol pump style into half pint glasses only. In 1990’s it changed to Jupiters.

We refurbished in 2020 and reverted back to its original name.

Cask ale is always good quality here ... £4 a pint, good choice of breweries. 5 craft taps with rotation. Veltins, Warsteiner lager. A few Belgian and German bottles in the fridge. 3 TVs showing sport.

It's well hidden in Hackins Hey and I've not been here for many years. I'd heard that it's been refurbished recently. The interior now looks completely different. The bar has a good range of beers and ales and a good selection of European beers. Vast improvement on the old pub.

Lovely little pub in the heart of the city.. Tucked away up a little side street, but still a very busy little boozer. Friendly staff and reasonably priced drinks. Will certainly be going back there soon.

Great pub. Full of life, with welcoming bar staff. Was happy to accommodate a large group of us on a Saturday night. Pints of Railway Porter all round - delicious

Great atmosphere, great music, great pub. Went to two other pubs in Liverpool (Corn Market & Ye Hole In Ye Wall) and stuck our heads into others (Lady of Mann, The Grapes, White Star, The Old Bank) and this to us was the best.
