A timber-beamed inn with a rustic-chic dining room for hearty pub grub, plus suites and cottages.
The Masons is a Lakeland institution, an ancient inn lost in blissful country. You’re on the side of a hill with 15-mile views across a quilt of fields to Scout Scar; in summer, pub life decants onto a beautiful terrace – a sitting room in the sun – where window boxes and flowerbeds tumble with colour. The inn dates to the 16th century and is impossibly pretty. The bar is gorgeous, with low ceilings, wavy beams, flagged floors and roaring fires, then splendid local ales to quench your thirst.
Rustic elegance upstairs comes courtesy of stripped floors, country rugs and red walls in the first-floor dining room, so grab a window seat for fabulous views and dig into local fare, perhaps cheese soufflé, haunch of venison, toffee and banana sundae. Rooms (in the main house) and cottages (off the courtyard, great for families) all have comfort and style in spades. You’ll find lovely beds, pretty fabrics and super bathrooms; several have private terraces, too. As befitting a community local.

I've been frequenting this pub for many years. It's a wonderful building and ambience but the food there was not up to standard when we ate there last week. We were all disappointed with the pies which were clearly not homemade and rather lacking in flavour. Would not recommend anyone to eat there.
We recently stayed after winning a festive competition. The whole stay from start to finish was wonderful, the room (Cartmell Fell Suite) was fantastic with beautiful views, we had a gorgeous meal with great service and breakfast the next day was amazing! Thank you to everyone for making our stay so wonderful, we are already planning our return visit x
I booked a 2 night stay in the strawberry bank suite to celebrate my partners birthday. We received a lovely warm welcome by all staff, especially manager Jason who was very attentive and friendly. Drinks and food superb with large portions and service great. Very pleased with our room, large bath and tea and coffee facilities. Gorgeous decor. Unfortunately we couldn’t bring along our dog this time because we had a spa day booked the next day, but we especially love how dog friendly the Inn is and will definitely be back with our dog soon. The large heated patio area is great if you want to sit outside in the evening and the views are incredible. Lovely traditional open fire and full english breakfast. Lovely little getaway!
I’m not sure if the pub has changed hands recently but the menu was not as complete as it always was and the orders where a little hit and miss but got there in the end. Despite the more basic menu choices, the food was good, whereas it had always been exceptional. Nevertheless, the pub is a beautiful venue in a stunning location, and if there are new owners, I wish them every success. Perhaps they just need a little time to develop their own offering there.
In a lovely position with excellent views. Food was OK , service was limited you have to go to the bar to order your food and collect your own cutlery. The staff were fine , more business like than warm. It seemed a busy pub, but the service was quick. Outside there was large parasols, with very good heaters, to keep you warm when the sun went down. Worth a visit.
