About us

On a sunny day this is the perfect place to enjoy a drink.Malthouse Farm played a vital part in the village community in the 1800s. Supplying valuable malt to landlords and estate owners for the brewing of beer meant the area had enough ale to drink which in many cases was safer than water. It also provided much needed employment for farm hands who tended the land in the summer but needed work in the winter months which was the best time to soak and swell the local malt. Malt houses needed a lot of ground surface area to spread out the malt as it developed which is why the pub and adjoining buildings are such long thin and attractive buildings. On the menu you’ll find plenty of traditional pub favourites all freshly prepared. There’s a specials board that changes regularly and a delicious Sunday roast with all the trimmings. Behind the bar there’s an incredible selection of real ales quality wine spirits and soft drinks.

Updated January 2024 Checked in quickly and professionally by the lovely Claire: Gammon Eggs Chips Peas: Gammon looked like Salmon, tasted amazing, plenty of chips, pineapple looked thinner than a catwalk queen but had the flavour of a couch potato, amazing, PLUS, I couldn't even count how many tasty garden peas on the plate! GREEN ARMY!! 7 mins between full plate to crossed cutlery. As usual AMAZING! Isla very friendly quick service too 😃 Forgot I'd had the beef brisket (I think) Was delicious! Updated July 2023 Ordered the Duo Korean Chicken Main Meal. CRAZY GOOD! Quick and friendly professional service as good as ever, highly recommend booking a table early on as it's so popular and for the quality, extremely reasonably priced. Stayed in the Barn Suite, THE best room I've stayed in all of Prem Inns, Food was amazing and staff super friendly, crazy big carpark, Left my bag there by accident which had a LOT of cash in, all retrieved with no issues, That is huge to me, Would have given 8 stars but can only give 5

Loved this place. We went just before Christmas for a rare night out. I won't lie, I'd heard mixed things about the service but as I like to find things out for myself I put all of that to one side. When we arrived we where quickly seated despite being qp minutes early, the Waitress was polite and friendly as we sat down and took out drinks orders. I wasn't drinking (driving) but my wife asked for an Ale. The Waitress couldn't answer a question but went away for the answer and came back in quick time. We ordered food, we asked for a Starter and a Main. Unfortunately the main my Wife ordered wasn't available in the night (Sea Bass) but we found that out before the Started arrived and was dealt with politely and in short order. Disappointing but we could see they where busy and it was close to Christmas. The stated arrived in good time and was excellent quality, it was the Chefs shared platter and there was more than enough food for two to the point where I wondered if it was a little too much. For my Main I had the Signature Burger. I don't eat a lot of Burgers outside of Barbecue season so it was a bit of treat. It was delicious. It comes with a Roast Beef sauce which worked wonders for the meal, and an idea I'm no doubt goint to steal myself at some point! My Wife had the Beer Battered Fish with Chips, she enjoyed it and while I can't speak to the quality it certainly looked the part. While I was full at the end of my main course I'd spied about table taking delivery of a Cheesecake dessert and I couldn't help but find myself ordering one. While waiting I nipped outside for a Vape and found a large and pleasant heated area to indulge my vice. On returning the cheesecake followed me to the table. I was not disappointed at all. Delicious and set a new bar for Cheesecake in my head. All in all it was a delightful night and we found ourselves planning a return before the end of the night. Very impressed with it all and we look forward to our next visit because of it. An excellent night with no problems at all. Friendly smiley service at no doubt one of their busiest times as well. Congratulations to the whole team for that one.

Lovely little find on a bike ride along the canal from Wigan. Superb, fast, and friendly service. Beautiful setting and the food and drinks were great. Will definitely be returning for a longer evening at this lovely pub.

Lovely atmospheric pub. Service was attentive while waitress Debs gave us time and space to catch up telling us to shout when we were ready. Debs- you were really helpful and mindful of our communication needs thank you! Chicken & Ham pie with veg and mash was nice... pastry maybe a bit too crispy - amazed I cut it without it flying off! I asked for more gravy and a small jug was quickly delivered. Seafood grill was very highly rated- they said "one of the best I've had in a pub... worth every penny" Ham egg and chips was enjoyed as was the Risotto. Reasonable value for a meal. Quaint atmospheric pub with lots of interesting nooks, and historical features, spacious with outside dining areas too. Areas suitable for wheelchairs. We will return - thankyou for a lovely lunch!

Food was utterly delicious. Couldn't fault it. Beef cheeks were totally gorgeous and my gammon with coke & whisky sauce was utterly YUM with chips cooked to perfection. Compliments to the chef. Service really quick and friendly. Bar area only is dog friendly. Doggy treats and water readily available. Rubbish auto booking service - don't use! Managed to get a table as we were driving up north to Lancaster even though we'd tried to arrange to book by telephone via an automated system and they didn’t have a record of our booking or the message my husband had to leave. The manager and a member of staff kindly squeezed us in (with the dog) even though they'd just officially shut the kitchen (8pm on a Thurs - last orders 🍺🥂10pm). Really busy and bustling place even mid-week! Very cosy (but incredibly noisy due to a particular group of rowdy people who were walking to and from the restaurant to the bar area over and over again, getting more and more intoxicated and apparently upsetting the lovely staff, too. One of them almost poured his drink over my husband's coat as he walked/staggered past!) The manager apologised and asked if we wanted to move but we weren't staying long at all so it didn't bother us - but we did struggle to make each other heard, they were that loud! It was really kind of her, we were really grateful. The staff were really attentive but obviously harassed by this group and managed to keep their cool. Well done! I hope you at least got a big tip and they all left quietly (eventually!). Thank you for having us. We'll definitely come again x
