About us

Welcome to the Erskine Arms

The Erskine Arms is a traditional Georgian coaching inn nestled within the medieval walls of Conwy a stone’s throw from King Edward I’s imposing medieval fortress, Conwy Castle.

The Erskine’s slightly austere exterior hides a warm and relaxed interior. With chunky old furniture, rugs and open fires, exactly what you’d want from an old Welsh inn. The building in its current form was created during Victorian times by a combination of an old Georgian Inn and a traditional 17th century sail-maker’s cottage, not the most natural of bedfellows but they do combine to create an interesting interior of different levels and rooms and architectural styles.

Out of the windows you get interesting glimpses of the 13th century town walls and castle, the 12th century St. Mary’s church or up the Conwy valley towards the often snow topped Tal y fan. The town is hemmed in by the mountains to one side and the river and estuary to the other, giving Conwy a naturally strategic position, hence its fortification and many battles for its control. Conwy nowadays is quite the ‘hive’ of activity with lots of annual events, the Conwy Feast, the Conwy River Festival, Conwy Pirate Festival the historic Honey and Seed fairs – the dates for which, would you believe, having been set by Royal charter in the 13th century.

The Erskine offers a laid-back and friendly atmosphere to enjoy some fresh local food, great local ales, a glass or two of good quality wine and for those from further afield, quality cosy guest rooms.

Stayed over in Y Capel for one night, had dinner and breakfast too The room was lovely, the bed was really comfortable and the bathroom was great - huge shower! The food was great - two mains, a side, a pint and a glass of wine came to around £51 so a bit pricey but it was really nice. Breakfast was speedy service and cosy in the library, included in the price of the room so can't complain at all. Would definitely come back!

Probably the only place in the whole of Wales where a stranger is left alone to drink and reminisce on the days discoveries and enjoy the truly wonderful ales from a local brewery. The bar staff are magnificent, friendly and extremely helpful. Thank you, I truly enjoyed my time in your location.

I wish I could give this place a positive rating, but the experience we had was nothing short of horrendous. We called in advance, checking if a table for five was available, and were assured that while the restaurant was fully booked, the bar would have ample space for us. Excited and relieved, we made our way there within 10 minutes, only to be met with utter chaos and disrespect. The bar was jam-packed, not a single table in sight. Feeling confused, we approached the gentleman we had spoken to on the phone, hoping for some guidance or at the very least, an apology for the misinformation. Instead, we were met with indifference and rudeness. He nonchalantly informed us that they were fully booked, as if we hadn't just called and been assured of the opposite. When we expressed our frustration and disappointment, hoping for some sort of resolution, he simply turned his back on us. It was a blatant show of disrespect and unprofessionalism. We were left standing there, feeling humiliated and frustrated, while he moved on to other customers, completely disregarding the situation he put us in. The lack of accountability and sheer rudeness was appalling. Not only did this pub waste our time, but they also showed a complete lack of regard for their customers. It would have been fair and professional to warn us that there was a chance we might not get a table, instead of making false promises and leaving us stranded. I am appalled by the lack of customer service and basic decency shown by the staff at this establishment. It's clear that they do not value their customers or care about providing a good experience. I would strongly advise against visiting this place, unless you want to be treated with disrespect and left fuming with frustration.

Did not stay at the hotel. Often come here as our favourite place to eat in Conwy. Can get busy at times, have had a lovely lunch and dinner here. Great local beer, good nonalcoholic drinks for those who need it, and tasty local food thoughtfully made with good portions. Really solid place to go. Do make reservations if you need to eat in the dining room! I think it's also dog-friendly which is useful if you have a furry friend! Patio is really nice when it's sunny out as well.

Enjoyed a lovely, elevated Sunday lunch here. The meal was delicious, the service was pretty quick considering it was rather busy at the time we went (mid afternoon). Part of the indoor seating area is dog friendly which was nice to see, but we opted outside in the courtyard area. The only minor complaint is that we would have liked more vegetables as part of the dish, rather than needing to order extra for the table. That being said, the portion was overall decent! If we're back in Conwy, we would all be happy to return to try more from the menu
