About us

Nicholson’s Pubs are known for their individual style, exciting stories, and charming personalities — and The White Horse is certainly no exception.

Dating back to the early 1700s, our wonderful pub was rebuilt in the 1930s with a stunning art deco exterior, and two original stained glass pub signs in the ironwork of our balcony, depicting a prancing white horse.

The White Horse is a great spot to catch up with friends, relax with family, chat with colleagues, and generally enjoy the finer things in life in the unique surroundings near you.

Usually one of my favourite pubs around Carnaby/OxSt - quiet(er) location, cosy atmosphere, fresh pilsner. My most recent visit was marred by a boring debate over the size of the head in a Czech lager glass. Background before the boring whole story: I've never argued about the size of a pint head in my life. But after two pints that we both felt were underfilled, my partner questioned it (as you should when you're paying £6+). She was told that this was because 'it's a Czech lager', and that I, as a man, would understand...as we had seemingly been transported back to the 1970s. I then took a deep breath and went to the bar myself. After being ignored for a few mins, was offered the same explanation that Czech beers have a larger head. I understand this. I've drunk pilsner in Prague. I like beer. I like that when you drink beer in Europe they don't fill it to the rim. This is why the pint line is lower in a pilsner Urquell mug than it is on regular pint glasses. Again, I don't get fussed about this stuff often. But after this beer had settled, mine was a full 3cm below the rim before I'd had a single sip (photo). I pointed this out, and there was some back and forth about whether the 3.5cm of head they have been trained to pour means 3.5cm above or below the pint line (above, readers). The bartender started to get frustrated, and I tried to calm the situation by explaining apologetically that I wasn't trying to be difficult, I just wanted to understand and be sure I was getting a full pint! Eventually, the bartender offered to pour the pint into a conventional lager glass, intending to make her point. Ladies and gentlemen, I was proven right. She then reluctantly topped up my pint, and we got on with the rest of an otherwise pleasant evening. A frustrating experience that left a bit of a sour note, at a pub that was previously my go-to in the area. Will be investigating alternatives.

Was a bit hard to seat nine people, but we split it into two tables. The waiting time for the food was reasonable, food quality is good, but there could be more fries for the fish and chips. Staff was good as well. Overall it was a great place to visit, just try not to think about the hole in your wallet afterwards.

The White Horse was very busy at lunch time, so glad we had booked, the beef pie was excellent, full of flavour, great service from the staff.

I went to eat some British food and had some drinks, and I believed I had found the right place. I ordered a Chicken Roast, which came with a wide range of vegetables, a generous serving of gravy, and a perfectly prepared Yorkshire pudding. The dish was absolutely delicious. Additionally, I enjoyed a couple of beers, which had a wonderful aroma and flavor. Moreover, the staff and the manager were so friendly; they made me feel at home. I wholeheartedly recommend this pub.

Drinkers outside smoking cigarettes and Skunk and the fumes coming through the open windows at the front of the pub. Staff placing 'Reserved' notices on tables where customers were eating and drinking which is appalling practice for hospitality and really rude to customers who had spent money to eat or drink and then served notice to leave their table. A tourist family group arrived and being told you can sit on a reserved table but will have to leave at the time the table was booked. Again no courtesy, no offer of finding an alternative space where they could remain and dine at their leisure. Really poor service. No actual consideration for customers. Bad hospitality practice. And no evidence of knowledge of good quality customer service. This used to be a good carnaby street pub. But no longer apparently. Zero stars .
